Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved partial display updates when the previous image is unknown, avoiding a full refresh for dirty content.
    • Updated slow-refresh display behavior: the first attachment skips a clear; later attachments still clear the display.
    • Improved idle repaint timing by accounting for recent activity and preserving repaint status when no newer activity is detected.
    • Launcher windows now appear after favourites finish loading and are removed only if window creation succeeds.

Findings

Minor Bound the readactivity() retry loop in lvgldevicesattach().
Minor Retry the idle refresh when the reattach clear fails.

Review comments at @Modules/lvgl-module/source/devices/devices.cpp:
- Line 279: **Bound the `read_activity()` retry loop in
`lvgl_devices_attach()`.**

The new `while` loop retries `read_activity()` with no retry limit and no yield.
It runs while `lvgl_devices_attach()` holds the LVGL lock. If every read is
preempted for more than 5 ms, the loop keeps spinning and blocks other LVGL
work. Limit the number of attempts. When every attempt fails, keep the previous
`handled_activity_at` value and continue.
- Line 281: **Retry the idle refresh when the reattach clear fails.**

On reattach, the `display_clear()` result is ignored, and
`refresh_done_since_activity` is set to `true` unconditionally. If the clear
fails, the idle timer skips `display_refresh()` until new input arrives. The
base code retried this refresh. Set the flag from the clear result instead.

Walkthrough

The SSD16xx update task now uses partial updates for dirty content. If the displayed base is invalid, the partial update writes the inverted snapshot to the old-image buffer. LVGL slow-refresh logic tracks handled input activity and resets repaint and refresh completion when newer activity is detected. The first slow-refresh display attachment skips clearing. Launcher startup loads favourites before creating the window and queues auto-start after window creation. The documentation updates revise the TODO list and release checklist.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 56c0b

The changes leave bounded display-quality and startup responsiveness concerns, plus an unusual scheduling-dependent attachment delay. Merge risk is low, with these limitations requiring owner awareness; the replacement for manual release-app verification remains unconfirmed.

258-259: Minor · Potential issue · Heavy lift

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The new invalid-base path explicitly leaves the controller's old-image buffer containing the inverse of the target. The subsequent code marks the base valid without explicitly replacing that buffer; if update sequence 0xDC does not copy the new image into the old buffer, the next partial update uses a stale baseline.

The second update can omit or misdrive pixel transitions, leaving the panel different from the requested frame.

This can occur when: An invalid-base update succeeds, followed by a second dirty frame with changed pixels.

Modules/lvgl-module/source/devices/devices.cpp:177-178
Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Idle panel refreshes when the two tick reads differ by more than the margin.

activity_at is derived from a separate lv_tick_get() call, while the inactive time comes from lv_display_get_inactive_time(), which reads the tick internally. If the task is preempted for more than ACTIVITY_MARGIN_MS between these reads, the comparison at lines 177-178 clears both refresh flags. On an idle panel, the same callback then repaints and calls display_refresh().

The base callback cleared these flags only while the inactive time was below IDLE_REPAINT_MS. It did not reach this refresh through a skewed read.

Each such event causes one unnecessary repaint and quality refresh. The e-paper panel can flash without user input. The margin covers skew of 20 ms or less. A larger margin reduces how often this happens, but it does not bound it.

267-268: Minor · Potential issue · Low value

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Later attachments ignore display_clear()'s result but mark refresh complete. A failed clear may therefore receive no retry or fallback quality pass during the initial idle stretch.

Content left by an app that drew outside LVGL may remain on the panel until qualifying input occurs.

This can occur when: On a later attachment, the driver's clear callback returns an error or is unsupported.

Modules/lvgl-module/source/devices/devices.cpp:280-281
Minor · Potential issue · Low value

The first slow-display attachment skips display_clear() but starts with repaint and refresh marked complete, so the initial idle stretch cannot perform a quality refresh.

Residual boot-image ghosting may remain instead of being removed by the idle full refresh.

This can occur when: The device boots, LVGL draws its first frame, and the user provides no subsequent input.

Documentation/releasing.md-15-15: 1

15-15: Minor · Potential issue · Quick win

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The checklist now proceeds from updating TactilityApps to publishing documentation without the former manual CDN upload-and-test step. It may no longer verify that release apps are available and work with the new SDK.

The release can be completed with a broken app download or installation that the former check would have caught.

This can occur when: A release updates app versions, but an app artifact is missing from the CDN or fails to install or start with the new firmware.
