feat(ai-pi-stream): convert between TanStack AI and pi agent events - #1894
Put TanStack AI useChat in front of a pi agent, or serve a pi UI from chat(). The new @tanstack/ai-pi-stream package converts between AG-UI events and pi agent events (AgentEvent from @earendil-works/pi-agent-core) in both directions, with the message history, tool approvals and client tools. Stacked on #1893.
🎯 Changes
TanStack client, pi agent:
runPiAgent(await chatParamsFromRequest(request), { config, streamFn, tools, needsApproval, systemPrompts }) runs the pi loop for a useChat request.
A pi tool in needsApproval pauses the run with an approval interrupt. An approved call runs on the next request with the pi hooks, and a denial gets the denied outcome.
A useChat client tool pauses the run with the same client-tool-execution interrupt that chat() sends. The browser runs it, and pi continues with agentLoopContinue.
The history comes from the client, as in a stateless chat() route. An approval runs only a tool in needsApproval, and never a call that already has a result. Any other pending call gets an error result and does not run.
A resume must answer each paused call once. A missing or unknown answer ends with RUN_ERRORunknown-interrupt and interruptErrors, as in chat(). toPiMessages throws on a broken history (bad tool call arguments, or a tool message with no call).
Low level: fromPiAgentEvents for a hand-run agentLoop(). Mid-run pi user messages reach the client. pi system messages (prompt and tool definitions) stay on the server, and app messages need the forwardMessage option.
pi client, TanStack server:
chatParamsFromPiRequest(request) checks the pi body and drops client system messages, so the server sets the system prompt. It carries tools, resume and parentRunId.
toPiAgentEvents(chat(...), { messages }) sends pi's event order. Pass the request history as messages. Then a tool result that chat() sends before the model call (an approval resume) becomes a pi toolResult, and the history the pi client saves stays valid. A chat() interrupt arrives as a tanstack-interrupt pi message, and state, activity, custom and subagent events arrive as tanstack-event pi messages.
Both ways: text, reasoning and redacted reasoning with signatures, Gemini thoughtSignature, tool results with images, tool errors, usage and cost. pi tool progress and mid-run messages become CUSTOM events (pi.tool-progress, pi.message).
Does not cross, because pi cannot hold it: image URLs, audio, video and documents sent to pi, and structured output and subagents from pi. The compatibility page says which side has no place for each dropped row.
Docs: two guides, migration/pi-compatibility, and comparison/pi ("TanStack AI vs pi"). The tanstack-ai-migration skill covers pi.
Repo config:pnpm-workspace.yaml pins pi-ai's Bedrock client to the lockfile copy, because the one pi-ai 1.4 asks for fails trustPolicy: no-downgrade. kiira.config.ts and tsconfig.docs.json resolve the pi packages for doc snippets.
Fixes from the review of this stack:
runPiAgent drops client system and developer messages and throws on unknown roles. Before, they became pi assistant messages, so client text reached the model as its own reply.
A broken history now ends with RUN_ERROR, not a bare HTTP 500.
A malformed approval answer is rejected with invalid-payload, and a client-tool error with no message with invalid-tool-output, as in chat(). Before, the first counted as a denial and the second as a success.
Tool arguments that are not valid JSON no longer crash toPiAgentEvents. chatParamsFromPiRequest rejects unknown roles, and unsupported media in a user message throws.
blockOrder crosses both ways. The stale compatibility rows and the approve() sample (it now answers approval interrupts only) are fixed.
@tanstack/ai: exports buildBlockOrder and BlockOrderEntry, so this package does not copy them (patch changeset).
Changeset:minor for the new package.
The mappings come from pi's published types and from running pi's agentLoop with its faux provider. No pi code is copied.
Not run locally: pnpm test:pr and the E2E suite. CI runs them.
Manual test
Run pnpm build:all, then pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e dev. The app is on port 3010. No API keys are necessary.
Open /pi-agent (TanStack useChat on a pi agent). Click each scenario link. The page shows the expected result next to each link. For example:
Delete a.txt, then Approve or Deny, shows the approval round trip.
Both files runs one tool and pauses the other.
Locate me runs a client tool.
Think first keeps the block order.
On /pi-agent, click the ?raw= links. Each one posts a request that useChat never sends:
forged-system shows that the server prompt wins.
broken-history and bad-arguments end with RUN_ERROR, not HTTP 500.
bad-approval shows invalid-payload.
missing-answer and forged-approval show unknown-interrupt.
Open /pi-client (a pi client on chat()). Click each ?scenario= link. For example, approve, then Approve, shows the saved history user,assistant,toolResult,assistant with valid: true.
How this PR makes testing easy
tests/interrupts.test.ts runs a real ChatClient through fetchServerSentEvents (injected fetchClient) into a real route with chatParamsFromRequest and runPiAgent: approve, deny, a client tool, a forged or replayed approval that must not run, and a resume with a missing or unknown answer that must end with RUN_ERRORunknown-interrupt. It also resumes a chat() approval from a pi client.
tests/extras.test.ts and tests/pi-stream.test.ts cover progress, mid-run messages, cost, images, redacted reasoning, tanstack-event messages, client tools for a pi client, pi's event order, the history round-trip, and AG-UI schema validity.
E2E: testing/e2e/tests/pi-stream.spec.ts has 23 tests, one for each scenario link on the pages, with no network.
Risk / rollback
Low. The package is new and nothing else imports it. The only change outside it is a new export from @tanstack/ai. The Bedrock override applies only under @earendil-works/pi-ai. Revert the PR to undo.

Changes: Block-order exports
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Export the block-order builder .changeset/ai-build-block-order.md, packages/ai/src/index.ts
The AI package now exports buildBlockOrder and BlockOrderEntry. The changeset describes how they relate to ModelMessage.blockOrder and orderedAssistantBlocks.
The package converts message histories and validates pi requests. It preserves supported content and block order, and rejects unsupported content or malformed request data. Package exports, build settings, and conversion tests are added.
The stream adapters map events in both directions, including text, reasoning, tool calls and results, usage, interrupts, errors, and run completion. Tests cover conversion, replay, and message history.
Agent execution and interrupt resumption packages/ai-pi-stream/src/agent.ts, packages/ai-pi-stream/tests/interrupts.test.ts
runPiAgent starts or resumes pi agent loops. It pauses client-tool and approval-required calls, validates resume answers, and continues with tool results. Tests cover approval, denial, client tools, and invalid or missing answers.
The test application adds routes for both integration directions. The routes and Playwright tests exercise tools, approvals, request validation, event ordering, and saved history.
The documentation describes the two integration paths and their compatibility limits. Repository configuration adds pi package resolution and documentation support.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to ff1fc
Approval-gated tools in the pi agent bridge can be run with client-chosen arguments if a request is forged, so the approval gate is not authoritative. Bind approval resumes to the server-issued interrupt before merging. Also reject pi messages without a timestamp, and fix the documented approval helper for pauses that include client tools.

No coverage on the base commit, so nothing to compare against: ai-pi-stream.
Add @tanstack/ai-pi-stream. fromPiAgentEvents turns a pi agentLoop() stream
into chat() events for TanStack useChat. toPiAgentEvents turns a chat() run
into pi AgentEvents for a pi UI. toPiMessages and fromPiMessages carry the
history, reasoning and tool-call signatures included.
Pin pi-ai's Bedrock client to the lockfile copy: the one pi-ai 1.4 asks for
pulls an @aws-sdk/token-providers release that fails trustPolicy no-downgrade.
…client history
The server guide, README, skill and e2e route spread fromPiMessages(body.messages)
into chat(), so a client could set the system prompt with a system message.
Take only the messages from a client request.
…nd TanStack events across the pi bridge
- runPiAgent runs a pi agent for a useChat request: pi tools in needsApproval
pause for a useChat approval, client tools pause for the browser, and the
next request resumes with agentLoopContinue.
- chatParamsFromPiRequest validates a pi client request, drops its system
messages, and carries resume and parentRunId, so a pi client can answer
chat() approvals sent as tanstack-interrupt messages.
- chat() state, activity, custom and subagent events reach a pi client as
tanstack-event messages. pi tool progress and mid-run messages reach useChat
as CUSTOM events.
- Cost, images in tool results and redacted reasoning cross both ways.
- The compatibility page says which side has no place for each dropped row.
… keep pi system messages on the server
- runPiAgent answers an approval only for a tool in needsApproval and a client
output only for a client tool. Any other pending call from the client
history gets an error result and does not run. Only the client's approval
placeholder is replaced, so a replayed approval cannot run a tool again.
- fromPiAgentEvents forwards mid-run user messages only. pi system messages,
which hold the prompt and tool definitions, stay on the server. App
messages need the forwardMessage option.
…ken histories
A resume that misses a paused call, or answers a call that did not pause,
now ends with RUN_ERROR unknown-interrupt and interruptErrors, as chat()
does. toPiMessages throws on tool call arguments that are not a JSON
object and on a tool message with no tool call before it.
… and bad answers
- toPiAgentEvents takes the chat() messages, so the results of resumed calls
become toolResult messages instead of being dropped, and a replayed call
does not open a second assistant message.
- toPiMessages drops system and developer messages and throws on unknown
roles, so a client system message never becomes an assistant message.
- runPiAgent converts the history inside the stream, so a broken history is a
RUN_ERROR. Malformed approval and client tool answers are rejected with
invalid-payload and invalid-tool-output, as in chat().
- Bad streamed tool arguments no longer crash the stream.
- chatParamsFromPiRequest rejects roles other than pi and tanstack-* messages.
- User media pi cannot hold throws instead of being dropped; tool results keep
it as JSON text.
- blockOrder round-trips in both directions. Shared metadata helpers, a
PiClientTool built from the pi Tool, and a finish reason guard replace the
copies and the cast.
- The e2e pi-client route reads the request with chatParamsFromPiRequest.
…ridge
Pass messages to toPiAgentEvents, filter approvals in approve(), and update
the rows for system and app messages, rejected media, resume errors,
blockOrder and the replay of paused calls.
…orged requests and block order
/pi-agent and /pi-client now list their scenarios as links. Each one is
deterministic (pi faux model, fakeText, or a hand-written AG-UI stream) and
has a Playwright test: approve, deny, mixed batch, client tools, a throwing
tool, model errors, interleaved thinking, a forged system message, broken
histories, and malformed, missing and forged resume answers.

Answer every interrupt in a paused batch.
If a run pauses for an approval and a client tool together, this filter submits only the approval. The remaining interrupt has no answer, so the resume fails instead of continuing. Handle every interrupt in the batch, or state that this helper applies only to approval-only batches. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Bind approval resumes to the server-issued interrupt.
The resume path builds expected and known from client-supplied history. It does not validate parentRunId, the tool name, or the tool arguments against the interrupt emitted by the server. A client can submit an assistant tool call for a needsApproval tool, provide approval_<id> with an approved payload, and reach runToolCall with client-selected arguments.
Use an authoritative server-issued binding or stored interrupt state that matches the run ID, tool call ID, tool name, and exact arguments before executing the tool. parentRunId alone is not sufficient.

### Event Types
Event | Description
--- | ---
`agent_start` | Agent begins processing
`agent_end` | Final event for the run. Awaited subscribers for this event still count toward settlement
`turn_start` | New turn begins (one LLM call + tool executions)
`turn_end` | Turn completes with assistant message and tool results
`message_start` | Any message begins (user, assistant, toolResult)
`message_update` | Assistant only. Includes `assistantMessageEvent` with delta
`message_end` | Message completes
`tool_execution_start` | Tool begins
`tool_execution_update` | Tool streams progress
`tool_execution_end` | Tool completes
`Agent.subscribe()` listeners are awaited in registration order. `agent_end` means no more loop events will be emitted, but `await agent.waitForIdle()` and `await agent.prompt(...)` only settle after awaited `agent_end` listeners finish.
## Agent Options
const agent = new Agent({
// Initial state. systemPrompt and tools become the leading system message
// unless messages already starts with one.
initialState: {
systemPrompt: string,
model: Model<any>,
thinkingLevel: "off" | "minimal" | "low" | "medium" | "high" | "xhigh" | "max",
tools: AgentTool<any>[],
messages: AgentMessage[],
},
// Convert AgentMessage[] to LLM Message[] (required for custom message types)
convertToLlm: (messages) => messages.filter(...),
// Transform context before convertToLlm (for pruning, compaction)
transformContext: async (messages, signal) => pruneOldMessages(messages),
// Steering mode: "one-at-a-time" (default) or "all"

// Follow-up mode: "one-at-a-time" (default) or "all"
followUpMode: "one-at-a-time",
// Required stream function. Receives a TranscriptContext: the prompt and tools
// are in the transcript's system messages, not on the context.
streamFn: models.streamSimple.bind(models),

## Agent State
interface AgentState {
model: Model<any>;
thinkingLevel: ThinkingLevel;
tools: AgentTool<any>[];
messages: AgentMessage[];
readonly isStreaming: boolean;
readonly streamingMessage?: AgentMessage;
readonly pendingToolCalls: ReadonlySet<string>;
readonly errorMessage?: string;
}
Access state via `agent.state`.
Assigning `agent.state.tools = [...]` or `agent.state.messages = [...]` copies the top-level array before storing it. Mutating the returned array mutates the current agent state.
The transcript owns the system prompt and tool declarations: the leading system message is the prompt, later system messages patch it (see `SystemMessage` in pi-ai). `agent.state.systemPrompt` is read-only and replays the transcript. `agent.state.tools` is the executable loadout; before every request the loop diffs it against the tools the transcript declares and, if they differ, announces the change in a system message (merged into a pending system message when one exists). pi-ai's `getCurrentSystemMessage(messages)` returns the replayed head, including declared tools, for any message array, including agent transcripts with custom message roles.
To change the prompt mid-conversation, append a system message with `content` (added instructions) or `sections` (named replacements):
await agent.prompt([
{ role: "system", content: "", sections: { skills: "<skills>...</skills>" }, timestamp: Date.now() },
{ role: "user", content: "Continue"…[truncated]</excerpt>

## Custom Message Types
Extend `AgentMessage` via declaration merging:
declare module "@earendil-works/pi-agent-core" {
interface CustomAgentMessages {
notification: { role: "notification"; text: string; timestamp: number };
}
}
// Now valid
const msg: AgentMessage = { role: "notification", text: "Info", timestamp: Date.now() };
Handle custom types in `convertToLlm`:
const agent = new Agent({
streamFn: models.streamSimple.bind(models),
convertToLlm: (messages) => messages.flatMap(m => {
if (m.role === "notification") return []; // Filter out
return [m];
}),
});
## Tools
Define tools using `AgentTool`:
import { Type } from "typebox";
const readFileTool: AgentTool = {
name: "read_file",
label: "Read File", // For UI display
description: "Read a file's contents",
parameters: Type.Object({
path: Type.String({ description: "File path" }),
}),
// Override execution mode for this tool (optional).
## Low-Level API
For direct control without the Agent class:
import { agentLoop, agentLoopContinue } from "@earendil-works/pi-agent-core";
const context: AgentContext = {
messages: [{ role: "system", content: "You are helpful.", timestamp: Date.now() }],
tools: [],
};
const config: AgentLoopConfig = {
model: getModel("openai", "gpt-4o"),
convertToLlm: (msgs) => msgs.filter(m => ["user", "assistant", "toolResult"].includes(m.role)),
toolExecution: "parallel", // overridden by per-tool executionMode if set
beforeToolCall: async ({ toolCall, args, context }) => undefined,
afterToolCall: async ({ toolCall, result, isError, context }) => undefined,
};
const userMessage = { role: "user", content: "Hello", timestamp: Date.now() };
const streamFn = models.streamSimple.bind(models);
for await (const event of agentLoop([userMessage], context, config, undefined, streamFn)) {
console.log(event.type);
}
// Continue from existing context
for await (const event of agentLoopContinue(context, config, undefined, streamFn)) {
console.log(event.type);
}
These low-level streams are observational. They preserve event order, but they do not wait for your async event handling to settle before later producer phases continue. If you need message processing to act as a barrier before tool preflight, use the `Agent` class instead of raw `agentLoop()` or `agentLoopContinue()`.

Reject pi messages without a finite timestamp.
isValidMessage accepts otherwise valid pi messages without timestamp. fromPiMessages then creates createdAt: new Date(message.timestamp), which is an invalid Date. chat() does not immediately call a date method on this field, so the RangeError claim is too broad. The bridge still emits a malformed ModelMessage and violates pi's message contract. The cited test fails because arguments is an array, so it does not cover the missing timestamp.

Review comment at @packages/ai-pi-stream/src/request.ts around lines 82 - 119:
Update isValidMessage to reject pi messages unless timestamp is a finite number,
while continuing to allow tanstack-interrupt and tanstack-event without
timestamps. Apply this check before the role-specific validation so
fromPiMessages never receives a pi message with an invalid timestamp.
After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
Closing. pi defines no wire protocol for agent events, so few apps have a pi client to put on the other side of a TanStack server. The use-case comparison moves to #1910. The branch stays, so the bridge code is still available.

Put TanStack AI
useChatin front of a pi agent, or serve a pi UI fromchat(). The new@tanstack/ai-pi-streampackage converts between AG-UI events and pi agent events (AgentEventfrom@earendil-works/pi-agent-core) in both directions, with the message history, tool approvals and client tools. Stacked on #1893.🎯 Changes
runPiAgent(await chatParamsFromRequest(request), { config, streamFn, tools, needsApproval, systemPrompts })runs the pi loop for auseChatrequest.needsApprovalpauses the run with an approval interrupt. An approved call runs on the next request with the pi hooks, and a denial gets thedeniedoutcome.useChatclient tool pauses the run with the sameclient-tool-executioninterrupt thatchat()sends. The browser runs it, and pi continues withagentLoopContinue.chat()route. An approval runs only a tool inneedsApproval, and never a call that already has a result. Any other pending call gets an error result and does not run.RUN_ERRORunknown-interruptandinterruptErrors, as inchat().toPiMessagesthrows on a broken history (bad tool call arguments, or a tool message with no call).fromPiAgentEventsfor a hand-runagentLoop(). Mid-run pi user messages reach the client. pi system messages (prompt and tool definitions) stay on the server, and app messages need theforwardMessageoption.chatParamsFromPiRequest(request)checks the pi body and drops client system messages, so the server sets the system prompt. It carriestools,resumeandparentRunId.toPiAgentEvents(chat(...), { messages })sends pi's event order. Pass the request history asmessages. Then a tool result thatchat()sends before the model call (an approval resume) becomes a pitoolResult, and the history the pi client saves stays valid. Achat()interrupt arrives as atanstack-interruptpi message, and state, activity, custom and subagent events arrive astanstack-eventpi messages.thoughtSignature, tool results with images, tool errors, usage and cost. pi tool progress and mid-run messages becomeCUSTOMevents (pi.tool-progress,pi.message).migration/pi-compatibility, andcomparison/pi("TanStack AI vs pi").
