feat(ai-harness): session.seed starts an empty thread with existing messages - #1898
session.seed({ messages }) writes messages that exist already into an empty thread, and the next turn reads them. An app that moves to the harness can now keep the context of the conversations it had before. Before this PR, there was no way to put earlier messages into a session log: POST run takes only the last user message, because the log is the source of the history.
🎯 Changes
session.seed({ messages }) on the session and on the host.open handle. It returns a Receipt, like revert.
It accepts an empty thread and writes the messages in one transcript commit. The messages keep their ids.
A retry is safe. When the transcript already starts with the same messages (the same roles and ids), it accepts and writes nothing. This is true also after later turns.
It refuses with not_empty for a thread with other messages, duplicate_message for two messages with the same id (except the parts of one UI message that convertMessagesToModelMessages splits at its tool results), open_tool_call for a tool call with no result, unknown_tool_call for a tool result with no call before it, and busy when the session is not idle or another host owns the log.
Each message needs an id. A tool result can use its toolCallId instead, because the harness and convertMessagesToModelMessages both write tool rows with no id. A message with neither throws.
On a host with access, the handle checks the send action.
settledMessages moved from host.ts to session/helpers.ts, so host.transfer and seed use the same check.
Docs: a new section in docs/harness/sessions.md, "Start a session from an existing conversation".
Changeset: minor for @tanstack/ai-harness.
No change to the log record format: a seed is one harness.transcript record, the same record that a turn writes.
Out of scope: the user message of POST run still gets the request's runId as its id (for idempotency), so a client's own message id is not kept. This PR does not change that.
Send What is my name?. The model call gets the two seeded messages first.
Call seed again with the same messages. It returns accepted, and the transcript does not change.
How this PR makes testing easy: tests/seed.test.ts covers the turn after a seed, a reopen on a new host, the retry, each refusal, the missing id, UI messages through convertMessagesToModelMessages, and the access check.
Risk / rollback
Low. The method is new and opt-in, and no existing path calls it. The only shared change is the move of settledMessages, which host.transfer tests still cover. Revert the PR to undo.
Public API change
Before
// No way to put earlier messages into a new thread.constsession=awaithost.open(harness,{ threadId })awaitsession.send('Where did we leave off?')// the model sees only this message
After
constsession=awaithost.open(harness,{ threadId })awaitsession.seed({messages: convertMessagesToModelMessages(oldChat)})awaitsession.send('Where did we leave off?')// the model sees the old chat first
Added the ability to seed an empty chat thread with existing messages. Message IDs are preserved, and matching retries do not duplicate messages.
Seeding is rejected for nonempty threads with mismatched messages, busy sessions, duplicate message IDs (except split parts of one UI message), or unresolved or unmatched tool calls. Empty seeds are accepted, and seeding requires send access.
Bug Fixes
Forking or reverting to a repeated message ID now uses its last occurrence.
Documentation
Updated the session guide with seeding instructions, access requirements, and behavior details.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Adds session.seed({ messages }) to the public harness session API. The operation seeds an empty thread with identified model messages, accepts matching retries without writing, and rejects invalid input. The change also updates handling of repeated message IDs, tests, and session documentation.

… input
Two seeds of an empty thread could both pass the empty check and both
write. Seeds now run on a per-session chain, so the second one sees the
first seed and gets `not_empty` or an `accepted` retry.
An empty seed matched any transcript and was accepted on a thread with
messages. It is now accepted in an empty thread only, and `not_empty`
otherwise.
A tool result with no `toolCallId`, or with no open call before it,
passed. It is now refused with `unknown_tool_call`.

Reject duplicate message IDs before committing a seed.
If two seeded messages share an id, revert({ messageId }) selects the first one. The caller cannot revert to the later message. A subsequent turn can permanently drop messages after that first match. Require unique message IDs across the seed, including IDs on different roles.

revert resolves a message id in the transcript, so a seed with two
messages of one id made a later revert land on the wrong one. seed now
refuses it as duplicate_message. An assistant message may repeat the id
of the assistant message before it across its tool results: that is how
convertMessagesToModelMessages splits one UI message, and the docs tell
apps to seed its output. revert now resolves an id to its last message,
so reverting to such a UI message keeps all of it. The docs also say
that a tool result may leave out its id when it has its toolCallId.

Replies to the two outside-diff findings of the review from 2026-10-25:
Major, state.ts seed message keys (duplicate message ids). Confirmed: revert looks a message up by id across all roles, so a seed with two messages of one id made a later revert land on the first of them. Fixed in a3c6df1: seed now refuses a repeated id with a new reason, duplicate_message, before anything is written. The missing-id error stays as it was.
There is one exception. An assistant message may repeat the id of the assistant message before it when only tool results sit between them. convertMessagesToModelMessages, which the docs tell apps to seed with, splits one UI assistant message at its tool results into several model messages with the UI message's id. A strict refusal would reject any imported UI message that has text after a tool result, which is the documented path and the existing "takes the model messages of UI messages" test. Turns that the harness runs itself give each message its own id, so the exception only matters for seeded input.
For those split messages, revert now resolves an id to its last message (in revert, revertedAt, and visibleMessages in log.ts). Reverting to the UI message then keeps all of it, and does not cut it off at its first tool call. With unique ids, which is every transcript the harness writes, nothing changes. The JSDoc, docs/harness/sessions.md, the changeset and the PR description cover this now. New tests: "refuses two messages with the same id, whatever their roles" (same role, other role, and a split id repeated after a user message), and "reverts to a split UI message as a whole" (it fails with the previous first-match lookup).
Minor, docs/harness/sessions.md:179. Confirmed: a tool result is named by its toolCallId when it has no id, and seed accepts it. Fixed in a3c6df1: the line now says that each message needs an id, that a tool result may leave out id when it has its toolCallId, and that a message with neither throws.

Use the last matching message for through boundaries.
When session.seed imports an assistant message split by a tool result, both assistant pieces retain the same UI message ID. host.sessions.fork({ at: { through: id } }) passes that ID to forkInto, but findIndex stops after the first piece. The fork therefore omits the tool result and later assistant content, violating the documented “up to and including id” behavior.

A seeded UI message split at its tool results leaves several messages
with one id. A fork `at`/`through` that id stopped at the first piece and
lost the tool result and the rest of the answer. It now copies through
the last message of that id, as revert does.

Outside-diff finding on host.ts:2788 (fork through a split UI message): confirmed and fixed in 948d90f. forkInto now resolves the id to its last message, as revert already does, so a fork through a seeded UI message keeps its tool result and the rest of the answer. at: { before: id } still takes the first message, which is right for a cut before the whole UI message. New test: "forks through a split UI message as a whole" (it failed before the fix). docs/harness/sessions.md says it too. Package tests: 2483 passed.

Keep the first-piece boundary for at: { before: id }.
If a tool result has an ID and sits between two pieces of a seeded assistant message, host.sessions.fork({ at: { before: toolResultId } }) passes the first assistant piece's ID to forkInto. findLastIndex then selects the second assistant piece. The fork copies the tool result and the remaining answer, although the caller requested a fork before the tool result. Pass the resolved transcript position into forkInto, or keep separate boundary rules for before and through.
