🎯 Changes

atom.set(undefined) is ignored on a mutable atom: the atom keeps its previous value and subscribers are not notified.

const atom = createAtom<number | undefined>(1)
atom.set(undefined)
atom.get() // 1

The updater form, set(() => undefined), was not affected.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Setting a mutable atom’s value to undefined now updates the value and notifies subscribers. Repeating the same assignment does not trigger an additional notification when the configured comparison treats the value as unchanged. Computed atoms continue to treat an undefined snapshot as not yet computed.

TanStack#289 made mutable atoms skip any `_update` call whose argument is
`undefined`, so the reactive graph's no-argument recompute calls could not
clear them. `set(undefined)` passes that same `undefined` as the new value,
so it was silently dropped and the atom kept its previous value. Check the
argument count instead.

Walkthrough

Mutable atoms now process set(undefined) as an update. Argument-free internal _update() calls still skip recomputation. A regression test checks the resulting value and subscriber notification.

packages/store/src/atom.ts, packages/store/tests/store.test.ts, .changeset/atom-set-undefined.md
Mutable atoms skip recomputation only when _update receives no arguments. The test verifies that set(undefined) sets the value to undefined and calls the subscriber once with undefined. The changeset documents the behavior.

Admitting an explicit `undefined` exposed the `oldValue === undefined`
shortcut in `_update`, which counts any write over an `undefined` snapshot
as a change and skips `compare`. Setting `undefined` on an atom that
already held it notified subscribers again. Limit the shortcut to computed
atoms, whose `undefined` snapshot means it has not computed yet.
