Changes: PackCheck 4.0.0 update
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Server analytics and mod compatibility src/PackCheck.Servers/Analytics.cs, src/PackCheck.Servers/Players.cs, tests/PackCheck.Tests/AnalyticsTests.cs
Adds activity-log classification and reading, storage analysis and cleanup, player-stat parsing and name lookup, and common mod-loader and version solving. Tests cover log classification and ordering, storage cleanup, statistics parsing, and solver results.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 6fa83
The new Insights tab will show no activity on Forge/NeoForge servers. The mod-first wizard can install the wrong or stale mods, ignore Cancel, and finish without saying a requested mod failed. Fix these before release.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 6fa83
Cleanup relies on directory names rather than verified filesystem targets. Mod installation can also retain outdated selections and continue after cancellation. Existing download checks and cleanup confirmation reduce exposure, but these new lifecycle boundaries need attention.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new cleanup operation authorizes deletion by top-level folder name, without validating the resolved target or directory ownership. An allowed directory such as cache or logs that resolves through a link or junction can redirect deletion toward world data or another writable location. Confirmation and the latest.log exclusion do not establish target confinement. This attack path is inferred; platform-specific link and replacement-race behavior was not reproduced.
Medium · security · observed: The pending executable-mod set is not invalidated when the displayed input changes or a subsequent solve returns empty, incompatible, or failed. After successfully solving list A, a user can clear the input or unsuccessfully solve list B and still install A during creation. The installation guard checks platform, not correspondence with the current input or an immutable approved solution. Valid download hashes do not correct this content-identity mismatch.
Medium · security · observed: Canceling creation does not revoke the newly added post-provisioning installation phase. Cancellation closes the wizard and cancels its token, but mod resolution and writes use CancellationToken.None, and completion subsequently invokes the callback that registers the server. Downloads and executable-file installation can therefore continue after the initiating UI has relinquished ownership. Automatic execution of those files was not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The cleanup concern is bounded by the desktop process's filesystem permissions, not necessarily the selected server directory. A linked target could expose world data or other writable files. The path requires a prepared or mutable server tree and user-approved cleanup; ordinary remote chat input was not shown to grant this filesystem control.
observed — The inspected mod-first sink downloads addon bytes into the created server's mods or plugins directory. The new flow installs content but does not itself launch it. Its demonstrated authority change is continued or stale executable-file installation, not a verified cross-service or tenant compromise.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A server tree can present an allowed cleanup name while its resolved target belongs elsewhere. The cleaner checks the name and excludes latest.log, then deletes enumerated files without target-identity validation. This is a newly introduced confinement concern, not a runtime-verified exploit.
observed — A successful solve stores project IDs independently of the editable input. Later unsuccessful solves retain those IDs. Separately, cancellation does not reach the installation calls, and successful return still reaches server registration. These are new identity and lifecycle-control gaps in the composed creation flow.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Modrinth controls compatibility metadata and artifact metadata, while the user supplies project selections. The existing installer constrains artifact transport and form, but its hash verification is conditional on supplied hashes and does not validate whether the current user selection still authorizes the project. These installer properties predate the PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The added installation loop logs individual failures but does not return an installation outcome to the creation caller. Consequently, server registration and the completion toast do not distinguish complete installation from a partially installed addon set, weakening ownership and recovery visibility.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind cleanup to verified filesystem targets and an explicit deletion plan. Reject or deliberately handle linked cleanable roots, account for directory replacement races, and expose partial deletion outcomes instead of relying solely on folder names and a byte estimate.
proposed — Represent mod selection as an immutable, input-versioned installation plan. Invalidate it when input changes or solving fails, propagate cancellation through resolution and writes, and make partial completion and recovery explicit before registering the operation as complete.
proposed — Apply decompressed-byte and retained-event budgets while reading logs. The current 500-row presentation limit does not bound archive expansion, parsing, or event accumulation; this is a hardening proposal rather than an established denial-of-service finding.

Do not report a solved version that the wizard cannot select.
LoadVersionsAsync adds only the first 60 platform versions. If the common mod version is absent—or the platform-version request fails—this branch leaves Version at another value but still saves the mods and reports that the solved version will be installed. Stop the mod-first flow with an explicit error, or load and select the solved version before recording success. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clear a solved mod selection when the input changes or a new solve fails.
If a user solves one list, edits ModList, and then gets ModFirst_NoCommon or a request error, _pendingMods still contains the first list. Creating the server installs those earlier mods despite the new input and error. Clear the pending selection when ModList changes or a solve starts, then set it only after a successful solve. Pass the wizard cancellation token to mod installation.
If the user presses Cancel after server creation, Cancel() cancels _cts and closes the wizard, but these requests use CancellationToken.None. Downloads and file writes can continue after cancellation, and CreateAsync can still reach _done(def). Pass the active token through resolution and installation, and stop before completion when it is canceled. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Report mods that could not be installed.
If resolution or installation fails for a selected mod, this catch only writes a warning. Handle I/O failures in RefreshInsightsAsync.
OnTabChanged in ServerItemViewModel.Players.cs (Line 86) calls RefreshInsightsAsync() as fire-and-forget. If the Task.Run body throws, the exception ends up in a discarded task. The user sees an empty or stale Insights tab with no message. Examples that escape the existing catches:
ActivityLog.Read opens latest.log with no try block. A lock from an antivirus scanner, or UnauthorizedAccessException, escapes.
Scoreboard.Parse throws InvalidOperationException if a stats file has a non-object root or a non-object minecraft:custom. Scoreboard.Read does not catch that exception, so one bad file removes all three sections.
Catch the expected exceptions in the view model and show an error. Consider also adding InvalidOperationException to the catch in Scoreboard.Read.

Fix the date assigned to events from latest.log.
latest.log is not rotated until the next server start. A server that runs for several days keeps all those days in one file. Line 126 gives every line the last-write date. Events from earlier days then show today's date. They also sort by time of day only, so the newest-first order is wrong.
Lines in the file are chronological. Walk backwards and subtract one day each time the time of day wraps around. This cannot detect a gap of more than one day with no events.
