Why

A fresh-eyes review of the build and CI found checks that could not fail and tests that ran nowhere.

  • About 33 ignored engine tests (corpus sweeps, the C-LEARN and World3 gates, property tests) ran in no CI job, so what they pin was held by nothing. One pin, the C-LEARN LTM slot digest, is stale on main today.
  • The nightly AddressSanitizer job could not go red. It piped into tee without pipefail and ran with halt_on_error=0, so neither a failing test nor a leak changed its exit status.
  • The pysimlin tag guard skipped on every CI run, because a shallow checkout fetches no tags.
  • cargo deny check advisories in the PR lint job turned unrelated work red whenever an advisory was published overnight.
  • xmutil (the C++ Vensim converter, used only to compare against) was the repo's only C++ build, and its comparison tests compiled only under a feature that only the old ASan job passed. The importer's oracle is Vensim's own output in test/.

What

  • Gates. A gates cargo profile (release without LTO, with debug assertions and overflow checks); scripts/gates.sh runs the engine's lib and integration suites with --include-ignored, ext_data and --no-fail-fast; a gates CI job calls it. The script finds ignored tests itself, so a new gate needs no list entry. Every #[ignore] in the engine reads "<what it sweeps>; run under the gates profile", and docs/dev/rust.md states the rules.
  • xmutil deleted: src/xmutil, the xmutil feature, open_vensim_xmutil, mdl_equivalence.rs, test_open_vensim.rs, and their dependency-policy, CI and doc references. test/xmutil_test_models/ (test data other tests use) stays.
  • test-asan.sh: pipefail, --no-fail-fast, halt_on_error at its default, and allocator_may_return_null=1.
  • CI: tags fetched by refspec (the guard fails in CI without them); clippy with --all-targets --all-features; cargo deny check bans licenses sources in the PR gate and advisories in their own advisories.yml (daily, plus lockfile changes; files an issue on a scheduled failure); dependabot for actions; the Node 24 action majors; ubuntu-24.04 pinned.
  • Small removals: the unused test-generator dev-dependency, UnitMap.ctx, a leak in test_common.rs; an interned-slot-reuse test (one default-suite row and one gate).

Decisions worth a reviewer's eye

  • simulate_ltm::clearn_ltm_slot_maxima_digest is skipped by exact name in gates.sh, with a comment, so the job is not red on its first day. The loop-analysis change re-pins it and deletes the skip.
  • astral-sh/setup-uv is pinned to v10.2.0. That action stopped publishing moving major tags at v8, so @v10 does not resolve. An adversarial review caught this; it would have failed three jobs at "Set up job" on merge.
  • allocator_may_return_null=1 under ASan: the engine refuses an impossible run through try_reserve, and ASan's default aborts the process where the allocator would return an error. An infallible allocation that gets null still aborts.
  • Advisories are not a PR check, because they are not a function of the tree.
  • One PR, not two: the xmutil deletion and the CI changes edit the same scripts and docs.

Evidence

  • scripts/gates.sh: the default suite shows 33 ignored engine tests and the gates run shows none (6,542 lib and 873 integration tests pass; one filtered out, the digest). About 80 s to run on this machine, 111 s pinned to four cores, after a cold build of about 105 s. A planted failing gate and a planted compile error each make it exit non-zero.
  • ./test-asan.sh: exits 0 unmodified; with a planted failing test and a planted 4 KB leak it exits non-zero and reports each. Before the allocator option it failed on main on a test that expects an allocation refusal.
  • The tag guard: passes with tags, skips locally without them, fails under GITHUB_ACTIONS without them; CI's fetch line brings the tags in a fresh depth-1 clone.
  • Every uses: ref in .github/ (22 distinct) resolves with git ls-remote. The reviewer read each bumped action's release notes for breaking changes that touch how this repo uses it and found none.
  • Default suite: 8,242 passed; 36 to 45 s on four pinned cores against the 180 s cap.
  • cargo deny (all four checks), the dependency, docs and workflow-path checks, and the full pre-commit hook pass.

What this does not establish

No workflow has run on GitHub with these changes. Known only on the first runs:

  • pnpm/action-setup v6 updating itself from its pnpm 11 bootstrap to the pinned 10.6.0;
  • setup-uv v10.2.0's cache behavior, including that v10 disables caching on release events;
  • actions/checkout v7 writing credentials to a separate file, under cibuildwheel's containers at release time;
  • the gates job's wall time on a runner (estimated: a 10 to 15 minute cold build, then about 2 minutes);
  • the scheduled issue filing, and the first dependabot PR.

Also: the digest is skipped here, not re-derived; and no workflow linter was available, so the workflows were checked by parsing and reading.

P1 Badge Cite the retained xmutil behavior claim

After this change deletes both the xmutil equivalence harness and the vendored xmutil source, this sentence becomes an unsupported external-tool assertion beside the importer decision. The remaining corpus tests establish numerical parity with Vensim, not that xmutil emits ApplyToAll, so cite the upstream xmutil function/file and line that proves this representation or mark/remove the assertion.

Ignored engine tests ran nowhere, so a pin could go stale unnoticed
(the C-LEARN LTM digest has been). A gates cargo profile,
scripts/gates.sh and a CI job run every ignored test optimized, with
debug assertions on, on every push to main and pull request to main;
saying what the test sweeps. The script finds ignored tests itself, so
a new gate needs no list entry. The stale digest is skipped by name
until its re-pin lands.

xmutil goes with its comparison tests: the importer is held to Vensim's
own output, and it was the only C++ in the build. Several checks could
not fail and now can: test-asan.sh lost its exit status to tee and ran
with halt_on_error=0, and the pysimlin tag guard skipped whenever CI
fetched no tags. CI also pins its runner image, lints what the hook
lints, moves to the Node 24 action majors (setup-uv pinned to a
release, since it publishes no major tags), and reports advisories
from a scheduled workflow instead of failing unrelated pull requests.
