Agent Usage icon

Agent Usage

A macOS menu bar app that shows how much your AI coding agents are using: tokens, plan limits and alerts, in one place.

Version 1.1 · macOS 14 or later · Apple silicon and Intel

What's new in 1.1

  • Burn-rate forecast: under any limit that will run out before it resets at your recent pace, the menu says when, for example "At this pace, out by Fri 7:53 PM". An optional alert warns you once per window.
  • Limit history chart: how your 5-hour and weekly limits filled up over the last 7, 14 or 30 days.
  • Coloured gauge: the menu bar icon turns green, orange or red, and its needle moves, with your highest limit.
  • Projects: which folders used the most tokens, for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and Grok.
  • Cost estimate: what your tokens would cost on the pay-as-you-go API, from a price list you can edit.
  • CSV export: daily usage per agent, model and folder, for your own records.
  • Faster startup: numbers appear about a second after launch instead of ten.
  • ⌥⌘U opens the menu from anywhere.
  • One copy at a time: starting the app again while it runs points you to its menu bar icon instead of opening a second copy.

What's new in 1.01

  • Claude limits without signing in: Claude's 5-hour and weekly limits now come from the numbers the Claude desktop app saves on your Mac, so no sign-in is needed and no errors appear.
  • Optional live limits: for up-to-the-minute numbers, choose Live, with Terminal sign-in in Preferences → Agents. Sign in with Terminal… signs you in through the official claude tool and your browser.
  • Fewer errors: when Anthropic limits how often usage can be checked, the app waits and retries by itself, and keeps showing the last numbers it had.
  • Clearer Preferences: the Agents tab shows where each agent's limits come from.

What it does

  • Usage at a glance: a card per active agent with today's tokens and its plan limits as colour-coded bars that fill from green to red, with the time left until each one resets.
  • Plan limits (quota): 5-hour and weekly limits for Claude Code and Codex, and premium requests for GitHub Copilot, read from your Mac with no sign-in. For Claude, live limits are optional.
  • Forecasts: a warning under any limit that will run out before it resets at your recent pace.
  • Alerts: a notification when a limit reaches 80% and 95%, when it will run out before the reset, and when it resets.
  • Details on demand: click an agent's name to see totals for the last 5 hours, today, 7 days, 30 days or all time. The details include a cost estimate, a token breakdown (input, output, cache), a daily chart, the limit history, and the busiest projects and models. You can also show all agents combined, and export the data as CSV.
  • Your choice of menu bar text: today's tokens, the highest limit across agents, one agent's limit, or just the icon. The gauge itself can show your highest limit by colour.
  • Private by design: it reads the agents' own log files on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Supported agents

Agent Token usage Plan limits
Claude Code yes 5-hour and weekly, from the Claude desktop app (optionally live)
OpenAI Codex yes 5-hour and weekly, from Codex's logs
GitHub Copilot CLI yes premium requests per month
Gemini CLI yes not stored on your Mac
Grok Build yes not stored on your Mac

Antigravity keeps neither token counts nor limits on your Mac, so it doesn't appear.

Agents appear automatically once they are installed and used. Agents that are idle for 30 days are hidden; you can show them again in Preferences.

Requirements

To run

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel
  • At least one of the supported agents installed

To build

  • The Xcode Command Line Tools. The full Xcode app is not needed. To install them:

    xcode-select --install

Installation

From the disk image

  1. Open AgentUsage-1.1.dmg.
  2. Drag AgentUsage onto Applications.
  3. The first time, right-click the app in Applications and choose Open, then confirm. This is needed once because the app is not notarized by Apple. If macOS still refuses, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
  4. The gauge icon appears in the menu bar. When macOS asks, allow notifications if you want quota alerts.
  5. Optionally, turn on Open at login in Preferences.

The disk image runs on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

From source

In Terminal, from this folder:

./build.sh install

This builds the app, copies it to the Applications folder in your home folder, and opens it. To only build, run ./build.sh; the app is then in the build folder.

Using it

  • Click the menu bar icon to see your agents.
  • Press ⌥⌘U to open the menu from anywhere (can be turned off).
  • Click an agent's name to show or hide its details below; the ✕ closes them, and the share button exports them as CSV.
  • The arrow button refreshes now. Otherwise the app refreshes every minute (adjustable) and whenever you open the menu.
  • About shows the version and author; Quit closes the app.
  • The gear button opens Preferences:
    • General: menu bar text, gauge colour, the ⌥⌘U shortcut, refresh interval, whether cached tokens count in totals, open at login, alerts (including the run-out warning), a test notification and CSV export.
    • Display: which agents appear, forecasts under the bars, and what the detail section shows (cost, breakdown, daily chart, limit history and their length, top projects and models).
    • Agents: where Claude's limits come from (this Mac, or live with a Terminal sign-in), your Copilot plan's monthly premium-request allowance, the price list for cost estimates, and where the other agents' limits come from.

Cost estimates use API prices per million tokens. Claude models come with prices; for others (Codex, Gemini), click Edit prices… in Preferences → Agents, add the model's name and prices, then Reload. Grok records its own cost.

Privacy

  • Usage numbers come only from the log files each agent already keeps on your Mac.
  • Claude's limits normally come from the percentages the Claude desktop app saves on your Mac, about every 15 minutes while you use it. No sign-in is needed.
  • Optionally (Preferences → Agents → Limits: Live, with Terminal sign-in), the app asks Anthropic for your current usage every 5 minutes, using the sign-in of the claude command-line tool. The Sign in with Terminal… button runs the tool's own claude auth login, which signs you in through your browser; the app never sees your password. When the sign-in's short-term login expires, the app renews it and saves it back, so the tool stays signed in.
  • Nothing else leaves your Mac. There is no analytics or tracking. The app keeps its price list and a cache of the logs it has read in ~/Library/Application Support/Agent Usage.

Troubleshooting

  • An agent is missing: it only appears after it has been used. Idle agents are hidden; turn on Include agents with no use in 30 days in Preferences → Display.
  • Claude's limits look old: with Limits: From this Mac, they update while the Claude desktop app is in use. The time shown is when it last saved them.
  • Claude's live limits say the sign-in has ended: that sign-in lasts a limited time. Click Sign in with Terminal… in the menu or in Preferences → Agents. Until then the numbers saved on your Mac are shown.
  • Claude's live limits say Anthropic limits how often usage can be checked: the app waits and tries again by itself at the time shown.
  • Copilot shows a count but no percentage: enter your plan's allowance in Preferences → Agents (300 for Pro, 1500 for Pro+).
  • No notifications: check System Settings → Notifications → Agent Usage, and use Send a test notification in Preferences.
  • The first numbers take a few seconds: only on the very first launch, while the app reads all existing logs. After that it starts from its saved copy and only reads what's new.
  • A model shows no cost: it has no price in the list; add one with Edit prices… in Preferences → Agents.
  • No forecast under a bar: a forecast needs at least half an hour of rising readings in the current window. Claude's readings come from the Claude desktop app while it is in use.

Built-in check: to confirm the app's logic works on your Mac, run the self-test (it uses made-up data only):

/Applications/AgentUsage.app/Contents/MacOS/AgentUsage --self-test

Uninstall

Quit the app from its menu (Quit), then move AgentUsage from Applications (or the Applications folder in your home folder, if you built it from source) to the Trash.
