Without one, an address that drops SYNs holds a connection in SYN_SENT until the request timeout (30s by default) and indefinitely for the SSE height stream, which sets no request timeout. When a host resolves to several addresses, one dead node stalls every new connection that picks it. With a 5s connect timeout, hyper gives up on it and tries the next address. 2072-2104: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winMake the test assert the connect-timeout window.
The filler loop stops on both a 500 ms timeout and an immediate
TcpStream::connecterror. The health-check assertion then accepts any inner error. A shorter connect timeout or another quick connection error can therefore pass without exercising the five-second timeout. The outer Tokio timeout is rejected, but it does not distinguish the intended timeout from a quick error.Suggested fix

The test waited out the real 5s connect timeout. On a paused clock the runtime jumps to whichever timeout fires first, so it checks the same thing instantly: the request fails before the 60s request timeout. The test accepted any error before the request timeout, so an address that refused connections instead of dropping them would pass without exercising a timeout. Require the filler loop to end on a timed out connect, and the request to fail within a second of CONNECT_TIMEOUT. Problem
The
reqwestclient has noconnect_timeout. When an address drops SYNs, the socket sits inSYN_SENT:http_req_timeout_millis(30s by default) before failing;request_no_timeout) has no request timeout at all, so its connect attempt waits until the OS gives up.Hosts like
1328.hypersync.xyzresolve to several A records. If one node is unreachable from a user's network, every new connection that lands on it stalls. The client is rebuilt every 60s for DNS failover, so this keeps happening. Reported in enviodev/hyperindex#1691:193.32.220.135was unreachable over IPv4, with sockets stuck inSYN_SENTand the indexer stalled.Fix
Set a 5s
connect_timeouton the client, via onebuild_clienthelper shared by the initial and the refreshed client. hyper-util divides the timeout across the resolved addresses (connect/http.rs:t.checked_div(addrs.len())) and tries the next address when one times out, so a single dead node costs a fraction of a second instead of the whole request.Tests
test_unreachable_address_fails_at_connect_timeout. A local listener with a full accept queue drops SYNs, just like a blackholed address (Linux only, which matches CI).connect_timeoutremoved it fails with "operation timed out after 60s".cargo test -p hypersync-client --lib: 60 passed.cargo clippy --all-targetsandcargo fmt --checkare clean.netfeature as a dev-dependency for the test listener.Follow-up

hypersync-client = "1.2.0", so it needs a release and a version bump before indexers get this.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
