The four keys commands: get, add, update and delete - #37
Add meili get keys, add keys, update keys and delete keys, the five routes of /keys, and settle the contract question they raise: the key field goes to stdout as the API answers it.
Contract
The command name and flags derive from its routes by the naming rules of docs/contract/commands.md, and each route is reachable by a distinct set of flags, or the exception is recorded with its reason (or this pull request changes the contract and nothing else)
Output goes through src/lib/output.ts, errors through src/lib/errors.ts
The command never waits for a human: no prompt, no question, no $EDITOR; a delete command spreads BaseCommand.confirmFlags and its examples carry --yes
The command never speaks HTTP itself: the SDK or the generated client only, no fetch outside src/lib/clients/
The contract change.output.md has always said that a secret an API returns is data the agent needs and goes to stdout unchanged. The Secrets section of config.md said the opposite in its first line: "API keys and tokens never appear on stdout, on stderr, in --debug traces, in error messages or in snapshots." The two contradicted each other on exactly these five routes. The rule now separates the two things it was conflating:
the credentials the CLI holds to reach an API — the keys of the config file, the tokens of the credentials file — stay redacted on stdout, on stderr, in traces, in errors and in snapshots, as before;
a credential an API returns is data: the keys commands print the key field like every other field, because the CLI hides nothing from the agent it works for.
Rule 8 of CLAUDE.md follows. Nothing in src/lib/config.ts changes, and nothing else in docs/ still claims the old rule. Verified by hand that the two streams behave as the rule now says: with --debug, the trace shows "key":"****2221" on stderr while stdout carries the full value.
One corner, deliberately left as it is: get keys --id <the key value> puts that value in the request path, so --debug prints it in the > GET … line. It is a value the agent typed on the command line, which config.md already documents as visible in the process list, and redaction covers headers and body fields.
Tests
--help snapshot added or updated on purpose
JSON output snapshot for one success case per route and one error case
Integration test added (Meilisearch API commands only)
pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test pass locally
pnpm test:integration passes against the local Meilisearch: 25 files, 90 tests. The integration tests create their keys under a random uuid and delete them in afterAll.
Simplicity
Nothing in the diff exists for a case the API cannot produce, a caller that does not exist, or a generality nobody asked for (rule 16)
Anything shared lives in src/lib/, is used by this command, and is named below
One shared piece, used by get keys now: fetchKeys in src/lib/clients/meilisearch.ts. getKeys of meilisearch-js rewrites createdAt and updatedAt into Date objects on the list route, and JSON.stringify then writes them back with milliseconds where Meilisearch answered nanoseconds — 2026-10-28T15:09:28.077086675Z reaching the agent as 2026-10-28T15:09:28.077Z, a value the API never sent. ADR 0003 allows client.httpRequest for exactly this, as fetchStats already does. The four other routes return the body untouched, so they call the SDK. A unit test holds the precision.
In the tests, the offset paging of the /indexes and /keys msw handlers is one offsetPage function instead of two copies.
Docs
docs/contract/ updated for every name, flag, variable or code this change adds or renames, or nothing to update
The ADRs that touch this change were read; what they decide still holds, or a new ADR says what changed
No accepted ADR was edited. A new ADR was added if a decision changed.
Three rows added to the routes table of commands.md, and the GET /keys row now says --id <key> rather than --id <uid>, since the route takes either. No ADR contradicts the secrets change: ADR 0002 (superseded by 0007) already lists pass-through among the output rules, and no ADR ever decided the config.md line. If you would rather have that decision recorded as an ADR of its own, say so and I will write it.
Housekeeping
oclif.manifest.json regenerated
Changeset added, or the change is invisible to users of the package (docs of this repository, tests, CI)
New dependency justified below, or none added
Notes for the reviewer
Interface decisions worth a look:
--id is the key on all four commands, and it takes the uid or the key value, because GET, PATCH and DELETE /keys/{key} all accept either. On add keys, --id carries the body's uid, with --uid as the alias, as rule 5 spells out.
--actions, --indexes and --expires-at are not required: true, although the API requires them. similar --id --embedder already works that way: the flags stay optional so --data alone can carry a whole body, and a body that misses one gets the API's own missing_api_key_indexes. Only the path flag --id of update and delete is required.
delete keys writes nothing on stdout and has no --wait: the route answers 204 and no task.
Two of the simplify reviewers noted, as pre-existing debt rather than a finding against this diff, that the {...readJsonObjectBody(flags), ...fromFlags without the undefined} merge now appears in six command files and could become one helper. Out of scope here; happy to open it as its own change.
This branch and get-batches-command (#36) both start from main and are independent. They touch oclif.manifest.json, .changeset/first-version.md and the two contract snapshots, so whichever merges second needs a trivial rebase.
`get keys` covers the list and the unit route, `add keys` creates one with
`--actions`, `--indexes` and `--expires-at`, where `null` means no expiry,
`update keys` changes the two fields the route takes, and `delete keys`
answers nothing: the route returns 204.
The `key` field reaches stdout as the API answers it. `output.md` already
said that a secret an API returns is data the agent needs, while the Secrets
section of `config.md` still read "API keys and tokens never appear on
stdout". The two contradicted each other on exactly these routes, and the
rule now distinguishes the credentials the CLI holds to reach an API, still
redacted everywhere, from a credential an API returns, which passes through.
Rule 8 of CLAUDE.md follows.
`GET /keys` goes through `fetchKeys` in `src/lib/clients/`: `getKeys` of
meilisearch-js rewrites `createdAt` and `updatedAt` into `Date` objects,
which JSON writes back with milliseconds where Meilisearch answered
nanoseconds. ADR 0003 allows `client.httpRequest` for exactly that, as
`fetchStats` does. The four other routes return the body untouched, so they
call the SDK.

The CLI adds commands to create, list, retrieve, update, and delete Meilisearch API keys. The commands accept key identifiers and key properties, support paginated listing, and output API responses. Tests cover command behavior, request data, and Meilisearch integration.
Adds commands to create keys with flags or JSON input, update names and descriptions, and delete keys with confirmation. Tests cover flag precedence, null values, output, API errors, and integration with Meilisearch.
List and retrieve keys src/commands/get/keys.ts, src/lib/clients/meilisearch.ts, oclif.manifest.json, test/helpers/meilisearch-handlers.ts, test/commands/get/keys.test.ts, test/integration/meilisearch/get-keys.test.ts, CLAUDE.md, docs/contract/config.md
Adds key listing and retrieval by UID or key value, with offset pagination and --all support. Tests cover pagination and returned key values. The secrets contract distinguishes CLI-held connection credentials from credentials returned by the API.

Using a key value as --id with --debug can put that value in captured stderr logs. This bounded exposure warrants owner awareness.

Mask the key in the --debug request URL.
get keys --id <key value> sends GET /keys/{key} (src/commands/get/keys.ts:9, :38). traceRequest writes the full request URL to stderr without redaction (src/lib/clients/trace.ts:50). The redaction helpers in src/lib/config.ts cover headers and named body fields only, so the key value appears in --debug output and in any CI log that keeps stderr. Mask the key segment in the trace line. The request itself keeps the real URL.
Because the trace output changes, record the rule in the Secrets section of docs/contract/config.md in the same pull request.
