Problem

The Linux release binaries are built in Alpine 3.20. That release reached end of life in April 2026, and it ships OpenSSL 3.3, which also went out of support in April 2026.

Fix

  • Build in Alpine 3.24, which is supported until 2028 and ships OpenSSL 3.5.9 (LTS) and zlib 1.3.2. That matches the OpenSSL in Build macOS release dependencies for macOS 14 #523 for macOS.
  • Drop the static libraries that only curl needed. osslsigncode uses curl only with OpenSSL older than 3.0, the job never installed curl, and c-ares-static no longer exists in 3.24.
  • Accept static-pie linked in the static-binary check. Alpine 3.24's toolchain links the fully static binary as a static PIE.

Validation

I ran the workflow via workflow_dispatch from a temporary branch with only the Linux jobs enabled (42064666122). Both architectures linked OpenSSL 3.5.9 and zlib 1.3.2 statically, and all 391 tests passed. The amd64 binary also signed and verified a script on a Debian (glibc) host.

The Linux release jobs built in Alpine 3.20, which reached end of life
in April 2026 and ships OpenSSL 3.3, unsupported since the same month.
Alpine 3.24 is supported until 2028 and ships OpenSSL 3.5, the current
LTS series, and zlib 1.3.2.

Drop the static libraries that only curl needed: osslsigncode uses curl
only with OpenSSL older than 3.0, the job never installed curl, and
c-ares-static no longer exists in Alpine 3.24.

Newer toolchains link the fully static binary as a static PIE, which
file(1) reports as "static-pie linked", so accept that as well.
