fix(security): harden installer downloads and catalog host matching - #187
After merge, installer downloads cannot be redirected off https, five npm/pip installs no longer run install scripts or build sdists, the catalog matches homepage hosts exactly, and version cycles from the snapshot file are validated before they become part of an executed path. This addresses 46 of the 56 open code-scanning alerts; the other 10 are intentional and get marked in SonarCloud with the reasons below.
Changes
Redirects (S6506, 18 alerts): every curl that follows redirects passes --proto '=https'. That flag also covers each redirect hop: with curl 8.18.0 an https→http redirect stops at the 302, the same as with --proto-redir added, so the second flag is left out (it only doubled the literal for SonarCloud S1192). install_claude.sh names the flag once as CURL_HTTPS_ONLY. All targets are literal https:// URLs; aws_installer.sh gets the same flag although Sonar did not flag it.
Install scripts (S6505/S8541, 13 alerts):--ignore-scripts for npm installs of npm, eslint and prettier; --only-binary :all: for pip installs of pip and pipx. None of these packages or their dependencies has a preinstall/install/postinstall script, and all ship py3-none-any wheels.
Homepage matching (CodeQL, 8 alerts):_homepage_on() in catalog.py compares the parsed hostname with each domain or a subdomain of it. The result over all catalog entries is unchanged; tests/test_upstream_links.py adds lookalike-host cases that fail on the old code.
Version cycles (S2083/S6549, 5 alerts):detect_multi_versions() skips a cycle that does not match _CYCLE_RE (digits and dots). Cycles from tools_snapshot.json were not checked, and /../x left the intended directory. A new test in tests/test_version_ordering.py fails on the old code.
Test file modes (CodeQL, 2 alerts): rollback test scripts use 0o700, as bulk.py does.
Review fixes: a malformed homepage URL no longer raises at catalog import; install_uv.sh returns 1 when the installer download fails instead of running an empty script and reporting success (a stubbed-curl run shows the old function returning 0).
Taken back: a hardened download for the install_claude.sh fallback went through three review rounds, each finding a launcher case the previous fix broke. install_direct() is back to main's logic; the file only gains the https-only flag. The pre-existing download problem and the constraints for a fix are in install_claude.sh: a failed fallback download overwrites the working claude binary #188.
Every curl that follows redirects now passes --proto '=https'
--proto-redir '=https', so a redirect cannot downgrade an installer
download to plain http (SonarCloud shell:S6506). All affected URLs are
https already; aws_installer.sh gets the same flags although Sonar did
not flag it.
npm installs of npm, eslint and prettier pass --ignore-scripts, and
pip installs of pip and pipx pass --only-binary :all: (S6505, S8541).
None of these packages or their dependencies ships an install script
or needs an sdist.
Left as they are, because the flag would break the install:
@anthropic-ai/claude-code and pnpm (postinstall places the native
binary), yarn 1 (preinstall removes the corepack symlink) and ansible
(compiled dependencies without wheels for every supported Python).

ToolCatalogEntry picked the package source by substring tests such as
"gnu.org" in homepage, which also match https://evil.com/gnu.org or
https://pypi.org.evil.com/ (CodeQL incomplete-url-substring-
sanitization). _homepage_on() now compares the parsed hostname with
each domain or its subdomains. Over all catalog entries the result is
unchanged; new tests cover the lookalike hosts.
detect_multi_versions() puts the version cycle into a binary path it
then executes. Cycles read back from tools_snapshot.json were not
checked, so "/../x" could leave the intended directory (SonarCloud
S2083, S6549). Cycles that do not match _CYCLE_RE are now skipped.
The rollback tests create their scripts with mode 0o700, as bulk.py
does, instead of world-readable 0o755 (CodeQL overly-permissive-file).

Homepage-based package-source detection now matches parsed hostnames. Binary-pattern detection skips malformed cycles. Installer scripts restrict selected curl requests to HTTPS. Selected pip commands require binary distributions, and selected npm commands suppress package scripts. The Claude download fallback verifies a temporary binary before replacing the existing target. The uv installer now reports download and execution failures. Rollback test scripts use permission mode 0o700.
Priority: Normal
Change: Bug fix
Merge Risk: Low · up to d3eac
The security hardening and the Claude installer fallback look sound. One narrow edge case remains: a custom Claude launcher symlink whose target is temporarily unavailable can be replaced during the fallback install. The new hostname tests are also skipped by the unit-test selection. Both are small follow-ups and do not block merging.

It follows the conventional-commit style and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history. It omits the version-cycle validation and the Claude launcher fix, but those are secondary.

Add --ignore-scripts to the global eslint and prettier update in update_node.
The install path suppresses lifecycle scripts for eslint and prettier, but the update path does not. npm update runs install scripts of updated packages unless --ignore-scripts is set, so this path can still execute the scripts that the install path suppresses. The documented exceptions (@anthropic-ai/claude-code, pnpm, yarn@1) do not include eslint or prettier.

_homepage_on() let urlparse's ValueError escape for a malformed URL
such as "https://[broken"; the catalog is converted at import time, so
one bad entry stopped the audit. It now counts as no match and the
install-method fallback runs.
install_claude.sh downloaded straight onto ~/.local/bin/claude, so a
transfer that failed midway replaced a working binary with a partial
file. It now downloads to a temp file in the same directory, runs it,
and moves it into place only then.
install_uv.sh ran sh -c "$(curl ...)" || true: a failed download gave
sh an empty script, which exits 0, so a failed install reported
success. The installer is now captured first and a failed or empty
download returns 1.

--proto '=https' already applies to every redirect hop: with curl
8.18.0, a redirect from https to http stops at the 302 with --proto
alone, exactly as with --proto-redir added. The second flag doubled
the '=https' literal and raised SonarCloud S1192 in six scripts, so
the lines this branch added keep only --proto.
install_claude.sh has three such calls and names the flags once as
CURL_HTTPS_ONLY. install_uv.sh uses [[ ]] for its new test (S7688).

The native installer makes ~/.local/bin/claude a symlink to
~/.local/share/claude/versions/<version>. The direct-download fallback
moved its binary onto ~/.local/bin/claude, which replaced that symlink
with a regular file (and a custom launcher with it), so later native
updates no longer changed what ~/.local/bin/claude runs.
The fallback now installs the verified binary as versions/<version>
and repoints the symlink with a rename, the native layout. A symlink
that points outside versions/ is a custom launcher and is left alone.
Stubbed runs cover a native symlink, a regular file, a custom
launcher, no launcher and a failed download.

The fallback kept any symlink outside versions/ as a custom launcher,
then ran cleanup_npm_versions. A launcher that pointed into an nvm
install of claude was therefore kept and then left dangling, while the
function returned success.
The cleanup now runs before the launcher check, and only a symlink
whose target still runs counts as a custom launcher. A link into a
removed npm install is dangling at that point and is repointed to the
new versions/<version> binary.

Three review rounds in a row found a launcher case that the previous
round's fix to the direct-download fallback had broken: the native
symlink, an nvm-backed launcher, and a custom launcher whose target is
temporarily unavailable. install_direct() goes back to main's logic;
the only change left in install_claude.sh is the https-only curl flag
the code-scanning alert asked for, named once as CURL_HTTPS_ONLY.
The download problem that started this, a failed transfer overwriting
the working binary, predates this branch and is tracked with the
constraints a fix has to meet in
#188.
