Summary

PentahoComponent framed the /runreports/<name> response as a blob: URL in an <iframe> with no
sandbox attribute
, and let the engine's Content-Type decide how those bytes were parsed. A blob:
URL inherits the creating document's origin, so a report body carrying markup ran as the application:
it could read parent.document and the credential blob kept in web storage (mifosXCredentials →
Fineract Base64 Basic-auth key, replayable outside the browser until the password changes).

BirtComponent was already hardened this way in d3270984 (WEB-1239). This PR brings the Pentaho
renderer in line with its sibling.

output before after
HTML blob: iframe, no sandbox srcdoc + sandbox="allow-scripts" (no allow-same-origin)
PDF blob: iframe, no sandbox same frame, blob type pinned to application/pdf (Chrome will not run its PDF viewer in a sandboxed frame)
XLS / XLSX / CSV / XML framed as blob: download link, never framed

Two smaller fixes ride along: the report is requested for the configured tenant instead of a hard-coded
"default" (BIRT already does this), and a failed request now clears the output and releases the object
URL (finalize + catchError) instead of leaving a stale document behind.

Why the Content-Type no longer decides parsing

The type is chosen by the reporting engine, not by this application, so it must not be what determines
whether a response is read as markup. After this change:

  • HTML output is decoded to text and placed in srcdoc — no object URL is framed at all.
  • A PDF is pinned to application/pdf, so it reaches the browser's viewer and never a markup parser.
  • Every other output type is only ever offered as a download.

Verification

  • src/app/reports/run-report/pentaho/pentaho.component.spec.ts — 14 cases (new file; the directory
    had no spec): srcdoc + sandbox, the server's Content-Type cannot force markup, PDF type pinning,
    the ticket #zoom=500 fragment, downloads for XLS/XLSX/CSV/XML, tenant, object-URL revocation, error
    handling.
  • playwright/tests/admin/reports-pentaho-frame-isolation.spec.ts — 4 passed (setup-admin + 3) on
    the chromium-admin project, against apache/fineract:7ac780192 (1.16.0-SNAPSHOT).
    • the payload still executes inside the frame (data-payload="executed"),
    • but writes no credential marker (data-credentials absent) and does not change the top-level title,
    • PDF keeps the pinned blob: frame, CSV produces a download and no frame.
  • prettier --check, eslint, stylelint — clean.
Measured before/after (same stubbed `/runreports` response)

Before: frame src is blob:…, no sandbox attribute, frame body has data-payload="executed"
and data-credentials="readable", and document.title becomes PENTAHO_XSS_EXECUTED
(parent.* would throw from an opaque origin, so this is the same-origin proof).

After: frame is srcdoc with sandbox="allow-scripts", data-payload="executed" still appears —
report scripts are supposed to run — but data-credentials is absent and the title is unchanged.

Scope

Stock Fineract does not ship the Pentaho engine (GET /reports/template →
allowedReportTypes: ["Table","Chart","SMS"]; no .prpt design, no engine jar, only
DatatableReportingProcessService is deployed), and the app has no Pentaho provisioning path — the
.rptdesign upload that exists is BIRT-only. So the renderer is not reachable on a stock deployment.
This is a defence-in-depth / parity fix for deployments that install the engine (their own build or
plugin), and it is what keeps a future Pentaho provisioning path from inheriting the un-sandboxed sink.

Screenshots

Per CONTRIBUTING.md / AGENTS.md, UI changes need before/after screenshots — attaching them manually:
before = report output in a blob: iframe without sandbox; after = srcdoc frame with
sandbox="allow-scripts".

Checklist

  • HTML output renders in srcdoc with sandbox="allow-scripts" and no allow-same-origin
  • A payload in the report body cannot read parent.sessionStorage, cannot touch parent.document,
    and does not change the application's title
  • PDF output still reaches the browser's viewer, with the blob type pinned to application/pdf
  • XLS/XLSX/CSV/XML are offered as downloads and are never framed
  • Unit + E2E tests added
  • Formatting and lint clean (prettier, eslint, stylelint)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added access to the reports catalogue, including report search and engine filtering.
    • Reports can be run with specific output formats, including HTML, PDF, XLS, XLSX, CSV, and XML.
    • HTML reports display in a sandboxed viewer, PDF reports open in the browser’s PDF viewer, and other formats are available as downloads.
    • Report downloads use filenames based on the report name and format.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of repeated report runs, failed requests, tenant selection, and output cleanup.

Walkthrough

The report runner now presents HTML in a sandboxed frame, PDF through a blob URL, and supported data formats as downloads. New Playwright page objects and tests cover report navigation, execution, output selection, and output isolation.

Changes

Report output handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pentaho output handling
src/app/reports/run-report/pentaho/pentaho.component.ts, src/app/reports/run-report/pentaho/pentaho.component.html, src/app/reports/run-report/pentaho/pentaho.component.scss
The component uses the configured tenant identifier and selects output handling by type. HTML uses a sandboxed srcdoc frame, PDF uses an application/pdf blob URL, and XLS, XLSX, CSV, and XML use download links. Unsupported types remain hidden.
Report navigation page objects
playwright/config/routes.ts, playwright/config/selectors.ts, playwright/pages/reports/*, playwright/pages/index.ts
Routes and selectors cover the reports catalogue and report runner. Page objects provide catalogue filtering, report navigation, output selection, report submission, and output waits.
Component validation
src/app/reports/run-report/pentaho/pentaho.component.spec.ts
Unit tests cover HTML decoding and sandboxing, PDF and download handling, request cancellation, tenant propagation, object URL cleanup, unsupported types, and failures.
Output isolation regression tests
playwright/tests/admin/reports-pentaho-frame-isolation.spec.ts
Tests stub report API responses and check HTML frame isolation, PDF and download output, independent XLS/XLSX selection, and application-title protection.

Assert the PDF blob MIME type.

The E2E test checks only the blob URL and the absence of srcdoc. It does not check the MIME type of the blob used by the iframe. Add an assertion for the actual blob response. The unit test covers the component call, but not this browser path.

Suggested fix
     await expect(runReport.pentahoFrame).toHaveAttribute('src', /^blob:/);
     await expect(runReport.pentahoFrame).not.toHaveAttribute('srcdoc', /.+/);
+    const contentType = await runReport.pentahoFrame.evaluate(async (frame) => {
+      const response = await fetch((frame as HTMLIFrameElement).src);
+      return response.headers.get('content-type');
+    });
+    expect(contentType).toBe('application/pdf');
     await expect(page).not.toHaveTitle(XSS_MARKER);

This is an additional coverage improvement for currently working code. It does not establish a current production security issue.

Assert cancellation directly in these tests.

run('PDF') already removes the request with expectOne(). Therefore, the later expectNone() calls do not fail because of cancellation. They do not verify cancellation either. Store the returned TestRequest and assert cancelled.

@vbe-robotron could you please add a video for a testing done using the Pentaho report plugin? also the video while using BIRT will be great to have it as a regression test...

Thanks for the review feedback. The existing Pentaho Playwright tests and BIRT unit tests are passing. However, the current E2E environment uses stubbed report API responses and does not include the actual Pentaho or BIRT reporting plugins.

Setting up both real reporting engines would require additional compatible Fineract/plugin environments. I don't want to present stub-based recordings as tests of the actual plugins.

Would recordings from the existing security tests, together with the test results, be sufficient for this PR, or is testing against the actual reporting plugins a requirement for approval?
