Update World (2000) and Giant World (4000) maps. Pending additional map World 10000.
Intention is to remove Giant World prior to release. New map naming carries over into folder structure for better organization. This can also be seen in the nations for all three maps.
Original Worlds files also updated. Name untouched due to tracking concerns over very old map and no immediate need to change.
2000 and 4000 files are based off of 10000s. Other sources include existing maps.
The old was preserved. Rivers and oceans in 2000 and 4000 are near pixel copies of World and Giant.
The new was added. Terrain was given an overhaul. The "pretty" cosmetic land layer was re-mixed into the terrain height data. Extra effort was made in an attempt to match the cosmetic layer with the play layer.
Other features like reduced elevation (~1 pixel radius) around rivers. Some small islands and lakes joined to prevent removal.
All cosmetic layers were stripped of their darkest colors (pure black) to avoid clashing with other more important layers. All cosmetic layers are semi-transparent by default.
Nations were left largely alone. Removed Antarctica off of 2000. Added the three Antarctica's, but renamed them on 4000.
Currently the land-layer is set to nukable. This allows nukes to "scar" the land with no additional cost in development. However depending on settings this may be visually clashing with things like defense post.
Giant World has only been publicly available for a short while in the grand scheme of things. At its launch it was missing some basic features like major water ways. Its terrain height map also wildly differs from Worlds. In creating this overhaul of the two maps and the addition of the larger I hope to give the former giant a more proper introduction. I believe the naming scheme would suit them and the game.

Explanation
Issue #5797 requires updated World and World 4000 maps, cosmetic and play layers, and the Giant World rename. The summary shows World 4000 metadata, nations, play-layer settings, and cosmetic-layer definitions. Prior review evidence shows that the old GiantWorldMap registration and resources/maps/giantworldmap/ remain, so the rename is incomplete. The excluded PNG and BIN assets prevent verification of rounded corners, lower-right game-name text, and pixel-level play/cosmetic alignment.
Resolution
Complete the #5797 rename by removing or replacing the old Giant World registration and dependent resources. Provide reviewable evidence for the excluded visual requirements, or leave those requirements unresolved until the assets are available.

Verdict: changes requested. The new map's id breaks the map schema and consistency tests, and World silently loses its featured rank and forced modifier. Findings: 2 high · 1 medium
map-generator/assets/maps/world4k/info.json (and the generated resources/maps/world4k/manifest.json / Maps.gen.ts)
[High] "id": "world4k" fails the map id schema (info.json:3, manifest.json id) MapInfoSchema and MapManifestSchema require id to match /^[A-Z][A-Za-z0-9]*$/, an UpperCamelCase folder name that is also the GameMapType enum key (MapManifest.ts#L108-L111; the same pattern is in map-generator/info.schema.json). tests/MapManifestSchema.test.ts validates every info.json and manifest.json against it, so both files fail. This also produces the only lowercase enum member, GameMapType.world4k (Maps.gen.ts:138), which doesn't match every other map key.
[High] The folder doesn't follow from the map name (tests/MapConsistency.test.ts, "Map folders follow from map names")
That test needs name.toLowerCase() without spaces to equal key.toLowerCase(). "World 4000" gives world4000, but the folder and key are world4k. This test fails as well, and shared game links for this map would show no thumbnail.
Suggested fix for both: rename the id to World4000 and the folder to world4000, in both map-generator/assets/maps/ and resources/maps/. Optionally rename the translation key to map.world4000. Then run npm run gen-maps so Maps.gen.ts gets World4000 = "World 4000". If you need to keep world4k, the map would instead need a PREVIEW_FOLDER_EXCEPTIONS entry plus an infra MAP_DIRS entry, and the id would still have to be UpperCamelCase. Run npx vitest MapManifestSchema MapConsistency --run to check.
map-generator/assets/maps/world/info.json
[Medium] featured_rank: 1 and forced_modifiers: ["isCrowded:50"] were removed from World (info.json:6-8, carried into manifest.json and Maps.gen.ts:2026-2028)
The PR description doesn't mention this, which suggests the info.json was based on an older copy of the file. Effects:
World drops from the first slot in the featured grid to after all ranked featured maps. MapPicker sorts unranked maps last.
World games no longer roll the isCrowded modifier 50% of the time.
Suggested fix: if this wasn't intentional, restore "featured_rank": 1 and "forced_modifiers": ["isCrowded:50"] in world/info.json, then regenerate.
Checked: flags (all referenced flag SVGs exist, including Alaska, alberta, Australian Aboriginal Flag, aq and others), layer schema (alpha and nukeable are valid), the en.json keys for the new map and layers, and that the generated Maps.gen.ts matches the info.json files.

Verdict: Changes requested. The world4k → world4000 folder rename is incomplete, so the map will not load and the map generator fails. Findings: 1 high, 1 low.
[High] Rename breaks map loading and the generator (map-generator/assets/maps/world4000/info.json:3-4, resources/maps/world4000/manifest.json)
The folders moved from world4k/ to world4000/ and id became "world4000", but translation_key is still "map.world4k". loadMapInfos requires translation_key == "map." + folder (codegen.go L172-L173). So go run . now stops with info.json "translation_key" ("map.world4k") must be "map.world4000" before it writes Maps.gen.ts or en.json.
That is why packages/engine-api/src/game/Maps.gen.ts and the map section of en.json are not in this range: they still use the old world4k id. FetchGameMapLoader builds asset URLs from the lowercased enum key (FetchGameMapLoader.ts L19-L22). At runtime it would request resources/maps/world4k/map.bin, manifest.json and so on. Those files are now under world4000/, so selecting World 4000 fails to load.
Fix: In info.json, set "translation_key": "map.world4000". Also use an UpperCamelCase id (e.g. "World4000"), which the generator check expects (codegen.go L166-L167). Then rerun the generator so Maps.gen.ts, en.json (map.world4000) and the manifest are regenerated together. Finally, search the PR for any leftover world4k / map.world4k references.
File: resources/maps/*/manifest.json (143 files) and tests/testdata/maps/*/manifest.json
Every map manifest was regenerated with raw Go MarshalIndent output: arrays expanded one value per line, and no trailing newline. The Oxfmt step in the generator did not run (see main.go L367-L374). The result is about 40k lines of churn on maps this PR does not touch.
Fix: Run npm run format, or revert the manifests of maps unrelated to this PR, so that only the world, world4000 and giantworldmap manifests change.

Update the World map4x.num_land_tiles value to match map4x.bin.
The declared count is 149650. The land-bit count of map4x.bin is 162138. The engine uses the declared count as the land denominator for the win threshold. Compact World games therefore end at about 7.7 percent fewer owned tiles than intended. At an 80 percent threshold, the win triggers at 119720 tiles instead of 129710. The base map pair matched exactly (158068 declared, 158068 land bits), so the mismatch comes from this change.
Other numLandTiles() consumers use the same value. These include the Doomsday clock, nuke behavior, MIRV and emoji logic, and the fallout ratio in AttackExecution.
Regenerate the World map4x metadata with map-generator/main.go, which writes result.Map4x.NumLandTiles at line 146. If you edit the manifest directly, the value must equal the land-bit count of the committed binary:

resources/lang/en.json
[Medium] Stale map.world4k entry left next to the new map.world4000 (resources/lang/en.json:1629)
This range adds "world4000": "World 4000", but it leaves "world4k": "World 4000" in place. No map has the world4k key anymore: Maps.gen.ts now uses world4000.
tests/MapConsistency.test.ts ("en.json map translations match info.json display names") checks every key in the en.json map section against the map keys (MapConsistency.test.ts L307-L314). It will fail with en.json map.world4k does not match any map.
Fix: Delete the "world4k": "World 4000" line from resources/lang/en.json, or rerun npm run gen-maps so the generator rewrites the section. Then run npx vitest MapConsistency MapManifestSchema --run.
Not repeated here: the lowercase id / enum key (world4000 rather than UpperCamelCase World4000). The earlier reviews already reported it and it is still unresolved. Also checked: translation_key now matches the folder; the Maps.gen.ts enum key, id and translationKey agree with info.json; and the world4000/manifest.json reformat only changes formatting and the translation key.
lol, I thought all this formatting was an error at first, why isn't this fed back into the raw files so it doesn't have to compile like this each time?
Verdict: No issues found. 0 critical, 0 major, 0 minor.
This range only changes formatting across resources/maps/*/manifest.json and tests/testdata/maps/*/manifest.json. It collapses multi-line arrays (categories, themes, coordinates) back onto one line and restores the trailing newline. No names, flags, coordinates, sizes or layers change. The result matches the compact formatting on main, so the PR diff now touches only world and world4000 manifests rather than every map, which removes the unrelated churn.
Every change in this range comes from merging main (#6120, "Remove v35 maps from New"). It removes the "new" category from 12 maps in their info.json, manifest.json and Maps.gen.ts entries. None of these hunks touch this PR's World / Giant World changes, and the merge left the PR's own Maps.gen.ts entries unchanged.
This range only merges in changes from main: src/client/KeyboardLayout.ts, src/client/hud/PlayerIcons.ts (#6249) and their tests. None of those files are in this PR's own diff, which only touches the World / World 4000 map assets, Maps.gen.ts and en.json, so there is nothing PR-specific to review here. Findings from earlier Claude reviews are not repeated.
No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.
Verdict: No issues found — 0 findings (0 high, 0 medium, 0 low).
The new description fields in world/info.json and world4000/info.json match the regenerated descriptionKey entries in Maps.gen.ts and the map_description.world / map_description.world4000 entries in resources/lang/en.json. Keys are lowercase map IDs and in sorted order, as map-generator/codegen.go produces them. No other translation files were touched.
The snapshot format supports loading data from earlier builds, and gitCommit is informational. However, the restore path selects the current map by gameMap identity. Existing World saves therefore reach GameMapImpl.restoreSnapshot with the new dimensions and terrain hash and become unloadable.
Keep the previous World terrain available under the identity stored by existing saves, and publish the updated terrain under a new map identity. Otherwise, add an explicit map migration that converts the saved map state and terrain edits before restoration.

Keep the full-size map within the renderer's texture limit.
If a WebGL context reports MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE of 4096, the renderer accepts it but tries to allocate a 4120-pixel-wide texture for a normal-size World 4000 game. That allocation fails, so the map can render with missing or black areas. Reduce the source map width to at most 4096 and regenerate its assets, or make the renderer handle larger maps before featuring this map. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Resolves #5797
Description:
Update World (2000) and Giant World (4000) maps. Pending additional map World 10000.
Intention is to remove Giant World prior to release. New map naming carries over into folder structure for better organization. This can also be seen in the nations for all three maps.

Giant World has only been publicly available for a short while in the grand scheme of things. At its launch it was missing some basic features like major water ways. I believe the naming scheme would suit them and the game.
