Resolves #5389

Description:

  • Companion map to World (2000) and Giant World (4000) overhaul.
  • Approx 10000x5000 (thats 6x 4K, 10k wide being almost the max res the game can handle)
  • Made for testing or tournament purposes. Not intended for public rotation at its full size.
  • Larger in compact mode then any other map in standard mode. (LOL)
  • Cosmetics may need compact-compression if compact-only mode is made public.
  • Nations are based off of most populated cities. Very high number of nations added intentionally.
  • Map has been overbuilt. Underlayer for water-nukes. Under layer for potential future land-nukes.

Be advised:

  • Rendering grinds to a halt (World 10000 is nearly last on the list) when the cosmetics are being processed.
  • Map MUST be disabled for MOBILE as it will just crash some browsers. Near or over 1gb of ram being used.

Explanation

The changed files remain connected to issue #5389. They define World 10000, register its generated map metadata, provide its map binaries and layer assets, and add the required translation labels. The additional nations, map layers, thumbnail, and generator source support the new map. No unrelated product feature or unrelated configuration change appears in the reviewed evidence.

Explanation

Issue #5389 requires World 10000 to be non-public and to add only the play layer, with placeholder pretty-layer files. The PR adds the map data and generated registration, but resources/maps/world10000/manifest.json places the map in new and world and does not mark it hidden. The generated MapInfo contract says hidden keeps a map out of pickers, random picks, and public lobbies. The reviewed evidence therefore shows no non-public control and indicates that the map can enter public map selection. Issue #5389 has no separate automated-test requirement. The binary layer files cannot be inspected for placeholder content from the available evidence.

Resolution

Mark World10000 as hidden in the map metadata source and regenerate the manifest and Maps.gen.ts. Verify that the map is excluded from map pickers, random selection, and public lobbies. Confirm that the pretty-layer files meet the placeholder requirement.

Verdict: One issue to fix before merge. Findings: 1 high, 0 medium, 0 low.

packages/engine-api/src/game/Maps.gen.ts (generated from map-generator/assets/maps/world10000/info.json)

[High] World 10000 goes into public lobby rotation and random map picks by default, at Maps.gen.ts:L2030-L2040

  • What is wrong: The PR description says the map is "not intended for public rotation" and "MUST be disabled for MOBILE as it will just crash some browsers". The new entry is not hidden, so it is part of listedMaps (GameTypes.ts:L127). Two places pick from that list:

    • MapPlaylist.buildMapsList loops over listedMaps. A map the /map_weights API does not know yet gets DEFAULT_MAP_WEIGHT (5), the same weight as any other map (MapPlaylist.ts:L747-L748).
    • The client random-map helper getRandomMapType() also picks from listedMaps (GameConfigHelpers.ts:L131).

Nothing checks for mobile anywhere. As soon as this deploys, public FFA, team and special lobbies can deal this 10000×5000 map, with its 378 default nations, to every player, mobile included. The categories also include "new", which shows it in the picker's New tab.

  • Suggested fix: Keep the map out of public rotation in code, not only through an API weight. For example, add an explicit exclusion in MapPlaylist.buildMapsList (or a new info.json flag that codegen emits, such as publicLobby: false) and leave it out of getRandomMapType(). Setting "hidden": true would also work, but it removes the map from the picker entirely and breaks the listedMaps.length === maps.length - 1 assertion in tests/ListedMaps.test.ts. At the very least, set the map's /map_weights entries to 0 in the API before this deploys.

Reviewed range: 1b3214f → 7243938 (incremental).

Verdict: One small issue: the rename was not regenerated into the shipped manifest. Findings: 0 high, 1 medium, 0 low.

resources/maps/world10000/manifest.json (generated from map-generator/assets/maps/world10000/info.json)

[Medium] The nation renames only changed the source info.json. The manifest the game loads still has the old names.

  • What is wrong: This range renames Waššukanni → Wassukanni and Amundsen–Scott → Amundsen Scott in info.json:L1727-L1731. resources/maps/world10000/manifest.json was not regenerated, so it still has "name": "Waššukanni" and "name": "Amundsen–Scott". At runtime the nations come from the manifest (MapManifest.ts:210 → GameRunner.ts:73), so players will still see the old non-ASCII names. The source and the generated output are now out of sync. No test catches this, because tests/MapConsistency.test.ts compares info.json only with Maps.gen.ts and en.json, not with the manifest's nation list.
  • Suggested fix: Rerun the map generator for world10000 (npm run gen-maps, or the generator for this one map) and commit the regenerated resources/maps/world10000/manifest.json.

Avoid decoding full-size World10000 layers for Normal-size games.

Normal-size games decode w10kland.webp and w10kwater.webp at 10000×5000. Each decoded layer is about 200 MB of RGBA. The images stay in memory and are uploaded to the GPU, even when the Map Layers switch is off. Load the .4x variants for this map, or defer loading until layers are enabled.

This range changes two nation names in resources/maps/world10000/manifest.json to plain ASCII ("Waššukanni" → "Wassukanni", "Amundsen–Scott" → "Amundsen Scott"). The names match map-generator/assets/maps/world10000/info.json, so running the map generator again will not undo them.

What changed in this range:

  • Amundsen Scott nation moved from y=5000 to y=4999 in both info.json and manifest.json, so it now sits inside a map 5000 tiles tall.
  • Maitri flag changed from id (Indonesia) to in (India), which is right for the Indian Antarctic station. It is changed in both files.
  • map_layers.w10kland / w10kwater in en.json now have readable labels (10K-Land, 10K-Water). No other translation files were touched.

Outside diff World 10000 has no mobile exclusion, so mobile players can load the full-size terrain.

World 10000 has no mobile exclusion, so mobile players can load the full-size terrain.

The PR says this map must be disabled on mobile. The registration in map-generator/assets/maps/world10000/info.json sets no restriction. The generated entry in packages/engine-api/src/game/Maps.gen.ts has no hidden flag. The map therefore stays in the picker, the random pool, and the single-player and private-lobby selection paths. When a user picks it at normal size, loadTerrainMap loads the full 10000 × 5000 terrain. No mobile check or compact conversion runs on that path. The author's browser-memory risk is a reported claim. The source only shows that no guard exists.

Hiding the map is the existing mechanism that removes it from these paths. Setting "hidden": true in info.json makes the generator emit hidden: true for the entry. The picker, random selection, and dealable pool all filter out hidden maps. Hiding also removes the map from desktop, which goes beyond the mobile-only requirement. A mobile-only rule would need new checks in the picker, single-player modal, host lobby, and random selection.

Suggested fix
   "categories": ["new", "world"],
+ "hidden": true,

Regenerate packages/engine-api/src/game/Maps.gen.ts from map-generator after this change. Do not edit the generated file by hand.

Add a mobile-only restriction for World10000 rather than setting the global
hidden flag, which would also remove the map on desktop. Apply the restriction
across map picking, random selection, single-player selection, and private-lobby
selection, and ensure `loadTerrainMap` cannot load the full-size terrain on

This range is a merge of main into the branch. None of the PR's own files (world10000 assets, resources/maps/world10000/*, its en.json keys) changed. In the shared files (Maps.gen.ts, en.json) the merge resolved cleanly: there are no conflict markers, and the World10000 entry in Maps.gen.ts is intact. It has no author/location, which matches its info.json and so keeps MapConsistency.test.ts in sync.

The only new commit, b106b67, merges main into the branch. Every change in it comes from #6120 ("Remove v35 maps from New"), which drops the new category from 12 other maps' info.json, manifest.json and Maps.gen.ts entries. None of these hunks belong to this PR's own diff (World 10000), and the merge doesn't conflict with or break the World 10000 files.
