Reference to Existing Issue

Closes #904.

Description of Changes

Completes the controller browser-test migration started in #1139.
The remaining tests used a WSGI live server, which could not serve
the WebSocket connections opened by the admin pages.

  • Migrated the remaining browser tests to a controller-local Channels
    live-server base.
  • Restored migration-created data before server startup and ordinary
database defaults after shutdown, supporting mixed browser and
    transaction test runs.
  • Added lifecycle regression tests covering mixed class ordering,
stable migration-created IDs, and cleanup after failed setup.
  • Applied WHOIS configuration before server startup and split the
    configured/unconfigured cases.
  • Added a scoped Redis-backed regression that waits for the page's
actual command socket and verifies an existing row updates without
reloading. Delayed schema loading exercises asynchronous startup.
  • Removed the explicit command-widget refresh workaround and allowed
time for the application's existing first-command reload fallback.
  • Preserved browser warning and security checks, and documented serial
    ASGI browser-test execution.

Testing

Verified locally on Python 3.12 / Django 5.2:

  • ./runtests: all stages passed, including 1,138 standard tests,
23 browser tests, the sample-app suite, and Channels tests.
  • ./run-qa-checks: passed.
  • Mixed browser/transaction runs passed in both orders.
  • Negative controls reproduced the original database-restoration,
    socket-readiness, and widget-timeout failures.

Local Django 5.1 dependency resolution remains blocked by dependencies
requiring Django 5.2 or newer. Dependency requirements and the CI matrix
are unchanged. Complete CI-matrix verification of the latest fixes
remains pending.

N/A. Test infrastructure and documentation changes only.

Migrated the remaining browser tests to a controller-local Channels
live-server base with consistent restoration of migration-created data.

Applied WHOIS configuration before server startup and preserved the
existing warning and security checks.

Added a Redis-backed regression verifying that command output updated
an existing browser row without reloading. Removed the obsolete refresh
workaround and documented serial ASGI browser test execution.

Closes openwisp#904

Walkthrough

Selenium test classes now use ControllerLiveServerTestCase, which adds serialized rollback and live-server cleanup. Lifecycle tests cover database and site state across test classes and setup failures. WHOIS tests configure the setting before the server starts and cover configured and unconfigured states. Command tests wait for WebSocket readiness and verify output updates without a page reload. The installation guide documents serial ASGI browser-test execution and configuration timing.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the required checklist, issue reference, change summary, testing details, and screenshot section. The manual-testing checkbox is not checked, although the Testing section reports extensive local verification.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #904 requires Selenium tests to use a Channels live server. ControllerLiveServerTestCase inherits ChannelsLiveServerTestCase, and the controller browser test classes use the controller base. The command tests wait for the page command WebSocket and verify updates without a reload. The lifecycle tests cover database restoration and cleanup. The openwisp-utils base recommendation is not required for this controller-scoped change. Debug-port assignment and BiDi sessions remain investigation topics, not concrete coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the WebSocket browser-test migration for issue #904. The custom lifecycle, Redis channel layer, delayed schema, socket readiness checks, command-row update test, browser error checks, coverage setting, and serial ASGI documentation support that migration. No unrelated production feature or dependency change is shown.

Full details: Ui Changes, Regression Test, Docs

Explanation

The PR does not introduce a visible end-user UI change. The JavaScript change stores the existing command WebSocket in jQuery data, and the other changes migrate test infrastructure. No screenshot or recording is required. Regression coverage was added in openwisp_controller/tests/test_live_server.py and TestCommandUpdates in openwisp_controller/connection/tests/test_selenium.py. The installation guide documents serial ASGI browser-test execution and ControllerLiveServerTestCase configuration.

Comment thread openwisp_controller/connection/tests/test_selenium.py Outdated
Restored migration snapshots before starting Daphne and ordinary database
defaults after stopping it. Covered mixed transaction/browser test order
and cleanup after partial server or subclass setup failures.

Waited for the actual page command socket instead of an auxiliary
connection, with delayed schema loading in the regression test. Allowed
the existing four-second first-command reload fallback in the widget test.

coverage: 98.363%. remained the same — AnirudhSinghRajora:issues/904-asgi-browser-tests into openwisp:master

Kept manual pre-server snapshot restoration for Django versions before
5.2, where transaction test setup runs only before each test. Relied on
eager class setup on newer Django versions and asserted exactly one
restoration per browser class.
