docs: deprecate download-protoc-binary in favour of get-grpc-tools `buf generate` needs buf, protoc and protoc-gen-php-grpc, and protoc has to match the protobuf runtime: since protobuf 21 the PHP runtime minor is the protoc major. The command derives the protoc constraint from google/protobuf installed in the project (read from the project's own installed.php, so a global or PHAR installation of this tool still sees it), then from ext-protobuf, and falls back to the latest protoc with a warning. `get` becomes an explicit alias of get-binary: as an abbreviation it would now be ambiguous. Wildcards and unbounded constraints get the calendar bound only for the RoadRunner software, so `--buf=*` is not turned into `>=3.0`. Assisted-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Inline comments: Review comments at @src/GetGrpcToolsCommand.php: - Around line 124-132: Update the DLoad version constraint used by GetGrpcToolsCommand so protoc release assets named osx-aarch_64 and linux-aarch_64 are recognized on macOS and Linux arm64; if no compatible DLoad release is available, document this limitation in the README. Review comments at @tests/Acceptance/GrpcToolsTest.php: - Around line 56-63: Update installsLatestProtocWithoutRuntime in GrpcToolsTest to skip when extension_loaded('protobuf') is true, so its warning and protoc-version assertions only run when the protobuf extension is absent. L137: Only the root package and its direct dependencies are read, and their entries never override dload.xml or the official registry (【70†#140】). Package entries are third-party input that `dload show` acts on, so the core stopped trusting any config: a version-command used to reach the shell, a binary name could leave the target directory, and on Windows escapeshellarg() corrupted `"`, `%` and `!` in arguments. Package entries are held to a stricter shape on top: one version option, file names, valid regexes. L388: L389: ## Configuration Guide L390: ### Interactive Configuration L391: L392: The easiest way to create a configuration file is using the interactive `init` command: L393: L394: ./vendor/bin/dload init L395: L396: This will: L397: L398: * Guide you through selecting software packages L399: * Show available software with descriptions and repositories L400: * Generate a properly formatted `dload.xml` file with schema validation L401: * Handle existing configuration files gracefully L402: ### Manual Configuration L403: Create `dload.xml` in your project root: L404: L405: <?xml version="1.0"?> L406: <dload xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" L407: xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/php-internal/dload/refs/heads/1.x/dload.xsd" L408: temp-dir="./runtime"> L409: <actions> L410: <download software="rr" version="^2025.1" /> L411: <download software="temporal" /> L412: <download software="frontend" extract-path="frontend" /> L413: </actions> L414: </dload> L415: ### Download Types L416: L417: DLoad supports three download types that determine how assets are processed: L418: #### Type Attribute L419: L420: <!-- Explicit type specification --> L421: <download software="psalm" type="phar" /> <!-- Download .phar without unpacking --> L422: <download software="frontend" type="archive" /> <!-- Force archive extraction --> L423: <download software="rr" type="binary" /> <!-- Binary-specific processing --> L424: L425: <!-- Automatic type handling (recommended) --> L426: <download software="rr" /> <!-- Uses all available handlers --> L427: <download software="frontend" /> <!-- Smart processing based on software config --> L428: #### Default Behavior (No Type Specified) L429: L430: When `type` is not specified, DLoad automatically uses all available handlers: L431: * Binary processing: If software has `<binary>` section, performs binary presence and version checking L432: * Files processing: If software has `<file>` section and asset is downloaded, processes files during unpacking L433: * Simple download: If no sections exist, downloads asset without unpacking L434: L435: <!-- registry list --> L436: <software name="complex-tool"> L437: <binary name="tool" pattern="/^tool-.*/" /> L438: <file pattern="/^config\..*/" extract-path="config" /> L439: </software> L440: <!-- actions list --> L441: <!-- Uses both binary and files processing --> L442: <download software="complex-tool" /> L529: In GitHub Actions the directory can be carried between workflow runs, so a run spends the rate limit only on releases published since the previous one: L530: L531: - name: Restore DLoad version registry L532: uses: actions/cache@v4 L533: with: L534: path: ./runtime/dload-cache L535: key: dload-registry-${{ github.run_id }} L536: restore-keys: dload-registry- L537: L538: - run: ./vendor/bin/dload get L539: env: L540: DLOAD_CACHE_DIR: ./runtime/dload-cache L545: ### Build Action Configuration L546: L547: <actions> L548: <!-- Basic configuration using local velox.toml --> L549: <velox config-file="./velox.toml" /> L550: L551: <!-- With specific versions --> L552: <velox config-file="./velox.toml" L553: velox-version="2025.1.1" L554: golang-version="^1.22" L555: roadrunner-ref="v2025.1.2" L556: binary-path="./bin/rr" L557: debug="true" /> L558: L559: <!-- Custom plugins --> L560: <velox> L566: Attribute | Description L567: --- | --- L568: `velox-version` | Version constraint for the Velox build tool to use L569: `golang-version` | Go version constraint required for building RoadRunner L570: `roadrunner-ref` | RoadRunner Git reference (tag, commit, or branch) to use as the base for building L571: `config-file` | Path to base configuration file that may be merged with remote API responses or other sources L572: `binary-path` | Output path for the built RoadRunner binary. File extension is automatically added based on OS (`.exe` for Windows). Defaults to current working directory L573: `debug` | Build RoadRunner with debug symbols to profile it with pprof (boolean, defaults to `false`) L574: ### Build Process L575: L576: DLoad automatically handles the build process: L577: 1. Golang Check: Verifies Go is installed globally (required dependency) L578: 2. Velox Preparation: Uses Velox from global installation, local download, or downloads automatically if needed L579: 3. Configuration: Copies your local velox.toml to build directory L580: 4. Building: Executes `vx build` command with specified configuration L581: 5. Installation: Moves built binary to target location and sets executable permissions L582: 6. Cleanup: Removes temporary build files L583: L584: Note L585: DLoad requires Go (Golang) to be installed globally on your system. It does not download or manage Go installations. L586: ### Configuration File Generation L587: L588: You can generate a `velox.toml` configuration file using the online builder at 【150†https://build.roadrunner.dev/†build.roadrunner.dev】 L589: L590: For detailed documentation on Velox configuration options and examples, visit 【151†https://docs.roadrunner.dev/docs/customization/build†docs.roadrunner.dev】 L591: L592: This web interface helps you select plugins and generates the appropriate configuration for your custom RoadRunner build. L593: ### Using Downloaded Velox L594: L595: You can download Velox as part of your build process instead of relying on a globally installed version: L596: L597: <actions> L598: <download software="velox" extract-path="bin" version="2025.1.1" /> L599: <velox config-file="velox.toml" L600: golang-version="^1.22" L601: roadrunner-ref="2024.1.5" /> L602: </actions> L603: L604: This ensures consistent Velox versions across different environments and team members. L605: ### DLoad Configuration L606: L607: <?xml version="1.0"?> L608: <dload xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" L609: xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="https://raw.githubusercontent.com/php-internal/dload/refs/heads/1.x/dload.xsd"> L610: <actions> L611: <velox config-file="./velox.toml" L612: velox-version="^1.4.0" L613: golang-version="^1.22" L614: roadrunner-ref="2024.1.5" L615: binary-path="./bin/rr" /> L616: </actions> L617: </dload> L618: ### Building RoadRunner L619: L620: # Build RoadRunner using velox.toml configuration L621: ./vendor/bin/dload build L622: L623: # Build with specific configuration file L624: ./vendor/bin/dload build --config=custom-rr.xml L625: L626: ## Custom Software Registry L627: ### Defining Software L628: L629: <dload> L630: <registry overwrite="false"> L631: <!-- Binary executable --> L632: <software name="RoadRunner" alias="rr" L633: homepage="https://roadrunner.dev" L634: description="High performance Application server"> L635: <repository type="github" uri="roadrunner-server/roadrunner" asset-pattern="/^roadrunner-.*/" /> L636: <binary name="rr" pattern="/^roadrunner-.*/" /> L637: </software> L638: <!-- Archive with files --> L639: <software name="frontend" description="Frontend assets"> L640: <repository type="github" uri="my-org/frontend" asset-pattern="/^artifacts.*/" /> L641: <file pattern="/^.*\.js$/" /> L642: <file pattern="/^.*\.css$/" /> L643: </software> L644: L645: <!-- Mixed: binaries + files --> L646: <software name="development-suite" description="Complete development tools"> L647: <repository type="github" uri="my-org/dev-tools" /> L648: <binary name="cli-tool" pattern="/^cli-tool.*/" /> L649: <file pattern="/^config\.yml$/" extract-path="config" /> L650: <file pattern="/^templates\/.*/" extract-path="templates" /> L651: </software> L652: L653: <!-- PHAR tools --> L654: <software name="psalm" description="Static analysis tool"> L655: <repository type="github" uri="vimeo/psalm" /> L656: <binary name="psalm.phar" pattern="/^psalm\.phar$/" /> L657: </software> L658: L659: <!-- GitLab repository --> L660: <software name="My cool project" alias="cool-project" L661: homepage="https://gitlab.com/path/to/my/repository" L662: description=""> L663: <repository type="gitlab" uri="path/to/my/repository" asset-pattern="/^cool-.*/" /> L664: <binary name="cool" pattern="/^cool-.*/" /> L665: </software> L666: <!-- Monorepo with release-please tags like `cli-v1.2.0` --> L667: <software name="my-cli" description="CLI component of a monorepo"> L668: <repository type="github" uri="my-org/monorepo" tag-prefix="cli-" asset-pattern="/^cli-.*/" /> L669: <binary name="cli" pattern="/^cli-.*/" /> L670: </software> L671: </registry> L672: </dload> L673: ### Software Elements L674: L675: #### Repository Configuration L676: L677: * type: Currently supports "github" L678: * uri: Repository path (e.g., "username/repo") L679: * asset-pattern: Regex pattern to match release assets L680: * tag-prefix: Text before the version in release tags, e.g. `bun-` for `bun-v1.4.2`. Update DLoad before release: protoc cannot be selected on macOS and Linux arm64.
DLoad 1.19.0 does not recognize the osx-aarch_64 and linux-aarch_64 asset names used by protoc releases. The command therefore returns FAILURE on these platforms. Its error suggests changing --protoc, but that does not correct the asset-matching problem.
Update the DLoad constraint to a release that recognizes these asset names. If no such release is available, document the limitation in the README.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The test depends on ext-protobuf not being loaded in the test environment.
The rr subprocess calls ProtobufRuntime::detect(). With no project installed.php and no google/protobuf in the running Composer installation, detect() falls back to fromExtension(). If the PHP that runs the tests has ext-protobuf loaded, the command prints ext-protobuf <version> -> protoc ^N.0 and does not print the "Neither … is installed" warning. The assertions on Lines 61-62 then fail, and a different protoc version is installed. Developers who work on gRPC often have this extension installed.
Skip the test when \extension_loaded('protobuf') is true, or make the environment independent of the extension.

osx-*andaarch_64, which DLoad's OS/arch detection does not recognise, so the strict selection drops them. Linux x86_64 and Windows work.
