Hi, I'm Steven Yuan 👋

I'm a software engineer interested in programming languages, compilers, code generation, and cross-language communication. I especially enjoy working on the layers between APIs, languages, runtimes, and the developers who use them.

Currently

I'm a Software Engineer II at AWS on the Technical Content Experience team, working on content automations: helping automate how AWS technical documentation is created and maintained, for developers and agents alike.

Previously

I was an open-source maintainer at AWS (@aws, @awslabs), where I worked on Smithy, an open-source API modeling language and code-generation toolchain, and on the AWS SDKs for JavaScript v3, Go v2, and Swift.

Before that, I built distributed, event-driven systems for Amazon's third-party orders services, including an EU GDPR data-deletion platform.

What I Work On

I like building tools and systems that make software development easier:

  • Programming Languages & Code Generation: API modeling, serialization, compilers, code generators, and generated clients
  • SDKs & Cross-Language Systems: tools that connect APIs, languages, and runtimes
  • Developer Infrastructure: build systems, testing, CI/CD, and developer tooling
  • Documentation Tooling: generating and maintaining technical content at scale
  • Distributed Systems: event-driven architectures, scalability, fault tolerance, and observability

Writing

I sometimes write about software engineering on Code Prosody.
