Primitive type defs marked with `@@branded` are emitted with `branded: true` in the generated TypeScript schema. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fields typed with a branded primitive type def resolve to `Base & { __brand: Name }`
in results, write inputs, unique lookups and value filters (equality, range,
`not`, `_min`/`_max`, array `has*`). Substring filters and `_count`/`_avg`/`_sum`
still accept plain values.

Declare and generate branded metadata packages/language/res/stdlib.zmodel, packages/language/src/validators/attribute-application-validator.ts, packages/language/test/attribute-application.test.ts, packages/schema/src/schema.ts, packages/sdk/src/ts-schema-generator.ts, packages/cli/test/ts-schema-gen.test.ts |
The language declares and validates @@branded for primitive type definitions. Schema metadata and generation carry the branded flag, and a CLI test checks the generated metadata. |
Propagate brands through ORM types packages/orm/src/client/crud-types.ts, packages/orm/src/client/crud/dialects/mysql.ts, packages/orm/src/client/crud/dialects/postgresql.ts, packages/orm/src/utils/type-utils.ts |
ORM results and primitive filters carry brands through operators, aggregations, and typed JSON filters. Type simplification preserves branded primitives. MySQL output transformation handles primitive type definitions by base type. |
Map branded types in Zod schemas packages/zod/src/types.ts, packages/zod/test/schema/*, packages/zod/test/factory.test.ts |
Zod mapping gives branded definitions branded output types and base-type inputs. Tests cover branded HolderId values, related foreign keys, and prefix validation. |
Exercise brands in client packages packages/clients/fetch-client/test/schemas/branded/*, packages/clients/fetch-client/test/branded.test.ts, packages/clients/tanstack-query/test/schemas/branded/*, packages/clients/tanstack-query/test/react/branded.test.tsx, packages/clients/tanstack-query/test/svelte/svelte-branded-typing-test.ts, packages/clients/tanstack-query/test/vue/vue-branded-typing-test.ts |
Client schemas define branded fields and procedures. Tests check branded result and input types, reject mismatched values, and verify primitive request serialization. |
Validate branded ORM client behavior tests/e2e/orm/schemas/branded-primitive/*, tests/e2e/orm/client-api/branded-primitive.test.ts |
The end-to-end schema and generated ORM aliases support branded User and Post fields. Tests cover writes, lookups, filters, relations, and primitive validation. |

Adds a
@@brandedattribute for primitive custom types (#2852). A branded type keeps its base type at runtime, but TypeScript treats it as a distinct type. That stops values with the same base type, such as two kinds of string IDs, from being swapped by mistake. The generated
models.tsexports each branded type, for exampleUserId = string & { __brand: 'UserId' }. Every field declared with that type uses it, across the ORM,@zenstackhq/zod, fetch-client and the TanStack Query hooks.Errors it prevents
1. Passing one kind of ID where another is expected
Every ID is a
string, so this compiles today and fails quietly at runtime:With branded IDs, the mistake is caught at compile time:
The same applies inside queries:
2. Querying with unvalidated input
A branded value can only come from a query result, or from an explicit parse or cast. Raw request input can't be passed straight through:
The zod factory gives a parser that checks the type's rules and returns the branded type:
3. Mixing up units on numbers
What requires a branded value
create/update/upsertdatacontains,startsWith,endsWith('user_'isn't aUserId)findUnique/WhereUniqueInput_count,_avg,_suminhaving(a sum of prices isn't a price)equals,in,notIn,notlt/lte/gt/gte/between_min/_maxinhaving, and arrayhas/hasSome/hasEvery/equalsResults are always branded, including nested relations and procedure return values. So a value read from a query can be passed back into another query without a cast:
Runtime behavior
None changes. Branding exists only in TypeScript: values are stored, serialized and sent over the wire as plain strings and numbers. The type's validation rules (
@@validate,@email,@gte, ...) still run on writes. The attribute is opt-in, so schemas without@@brandedare unaffected.Implementation
@@brandedattribute in the stdlib. The TS schema generator emitsbranded: trueon the type def.crud-types.ts):Branded<T, Brand>helper, used by bothTypeDefResultand the filter types so they always agree.StringFilter,NumberFilter,BooleanFilter,DateTimeFilterandBytesFiltergain an optional trailingBrandparameter. It defaults tonever(no brand), so existing uses of these exported types are unchanged.makeModelSchemaandmakeTypeSchemainfer the branded output type. Parsing still accepts the base type as input.Tests
