Motivation

A stacked PR uses a feature branch as its immediate base. That branch has no published integration image, so CI can fail during image pull before running any integration tests.

Brief description

Share moveit_pro's resolveStackBase helper shape: return the root base, traversal chain, and resolution status; stop at main, vX.Y, or vX.Y.Z; detect cycles with a visited set. The workflow selects that release/main image tag, or falls back to main with a warning naming the chain when resolution fails. There is no depth limit.

Adapt parent lookup for example_ws's GitHub fork network: fetch open PRs once with pagination, then match the head ref and repository locally. The server-side head filter returns empty results for known open parents in this fork. Check paired moveit_pro PRs against the resolved image tag so same-line pairings work and cross-line pairings remain rejected. Direct main/release bases make no lookup. Dispatch inputs, image registries, and job selection are unchanged.

Check out the helper for the resolver job and run its unit tests in the existing Format job.

How it was tested

  • node --test .github/scripts/stack_base.test.cjs: seven tests passed. Coverage includes main/release roots, nested stacks, same-named fork branches, release boundaries, missing/ambiguous parents, API errors, and cycles. The tests fail against the previous per-step lookup implementation.
  • Ran the actual resolve step under pinned actions/github-script v9.0.0 for 11 real/simulated PR payloads against live GitHub, comparing base and changed versions. Main/release stacks and valid pairings passed; cross-line pairings were rejected.
  • Tested pagination, ambiguity, cycles, a 25-level stack, release boundaries, fork heads, and zero-call direct bases through a local paginated API. Also exercised a live API 401 and helper loading from the workflow's sparse checkout.
  • fix(rebot_bench_base_config): anchor stack legs to the command, check reach first, and recover home on failure #1065 now targets main: tag main. Its reported former base fm/rebot-sim-direct-motion-astra, with a parent targeting main, resolves to main. A direct main-based PR also resolves main; a release-root stack resolves v10.2.
  • Targeted pre-commit checks passed. Remote integration results are recorded in the PR checks.

⚠️ This PR modifies 2 file(s) that also exist in PickNikRobotics/moveit_pro_empty_ws.

Consider whether the change should land upstream in moveit_pro_empty_ws first so downstream forks pick it up on the next sync.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Pull-request builds now select the image branch by tracing the open pull-request stack to its main or release base. If the base can’t be resolved or isn’t supported, builds use main.
    • Paired moveit_pro pull requests are accepted only when their base matches the selected image branch. Pull-request context comments now clarify how the stack’s root branch is determined.

The CI workflow resolves the root branch of the PR stack to select image_tag. It defaults to main when resolution fails or produces an unsupported branch. The paired moveit_pro PR must target the selected image branch.

Changes: CI Image Branch Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve the PR stack base
.github/scripts/stack_base.cjs, .github/scripts/stack_base.test.cjs, .github/workflows/format.yaml
The resolver follows matching open PRs and stops at main or release branches. It reports unresolved results for multiple matching PRs or cycles. Tests cover traversal, repository matching, stop conditions, and API errors.
Select and validate the image branch
.github/workflows/ci.yaml
The workflow uses the resolved main or release branch as image_tag, and keeps main as the fallback. The paired moveit_pro PR base is checked against image_tag; a mismatch fails the resolve step.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 63652

Stacked PRs rooted on older release lines such as v10.1 may request an integration image that the workflow says is not published. Very deep stacks also skip the documented fallback to main. Both should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Full details: Human Review Check

Explanation

The PR changes CI/CD behavior in .github/workflows/ci.yaml and adds a resolver used by the pull-request image path. The workflow accepts every vX.Y/vX.Y.Z release branch, then composes a branch-<ref> image reference and runs the integration job on the self-hosted GPU runner. The current comments state that branch images are published only for v10.2 onward, so an older release root can cause a missing-image pull and waste runner capacity. This matches the explicit CI/CD and runner-cost failure condition. The new .github/workflows/format.yaml test job and .github/scripts/stack_base.cjs further confirm that the PR changes CI execution.

The only inline finding was withdrawn after confirming that direct and stacked release bases intentionally preserve the existing image selection. Please review the current head again and update the overall review accordingly.
