feat(dual_arm_sim): Mobile FR3 Duo with Nav2 base and planning-scene tables - #1130
Mobile FR3 Duo dual-arm simulation: whole-body motion with Nav2 base control, planning-scene tables, a Nav2 map with the full table surfaces, a stiffer finger grip, a lift before returning home, and table colours.
Main changes
Mobile FR3 Duo robot with whole-body motion and Nav2 base control.
Planning-scene tables, table colours, the whole-table Nav2 map, finger grip stiffening, and the lift step before returning home.
Testing
Model and objective files checked offline.
Not yet run on a live stack for the latest commit.
Notes for review
The 10.1 launch include fix from an earlier commit is not on this branch.
… and Nav2
Replace the fixed FR3 Duo with the Mobile FR3 Duo: a TMR v0.2 base, a vertical
spine, a head and two FR3 v2 arms. Add the whole_body planning group over 18
joints, body_jtc driving them with base_pid turning its planar targets into base
velocity, and Nav2 on a map generated from the scene. The scene, blocks and
camera move with the arm mount so the existing waypoints and drawing poses still
reach, and the per-arm groups, controllers and hand frames are renamed to match
the new robot.
Squashed from the eight commits of 2026-10-14, oldest first:
feat(dual_arm_sim): move to the Mobile FR3 Duo with whole-body motion and Nav2
feat(dual_arm_sim): load the franka_description meshes through package:// paths
docs(AGENTS.md): load package:// MJCF meshes in Python through mujoco_package_uri
docs(dual_arm_sim): state where the Mobile FR3 Duo robot files come from
test(dual_arm_sim): check the whole-body end state with the base pose from TF
fix(dual_arm_sim): give Sort Blocks' MTC moves a robot link as the axis frame
fix(dual_arm_sim): let the gripper controllers stall on a grasp
fix(dual_arm_sim): put the Sort Blocks blocks within the robot's grasp
…e, colour the tables
Add the table legs to the planning scene in the simulator's grey, and colour each planning-scene table like its simulator body. Put the whole table surfaces on the Nav2 map. Stiffen the finger grip and move the scene camera and table legs in the MuJoCo scene. Shift the drawing centre to widen the spawn window, and guard the reach edge in a test. Lift the arms clear of the pick table before returning home. Add the MuJoCo sim reset objective for navigation.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review f5cee
The new franka_meshes package ships a test that fails under colcon test, and a regeneration tool whose source path is wrong, which also disables the mesh coverage checks. Neither affects simulation runtime, but both should be fixed before merge so that CI and the mesh-regeneration workflow are reliable.

Explanation
The description names the main changes in the changeset: the Mobile FR3 Duo dual-arm simulation with whole-body motion and Nav2 base control, planning-scene tables and their colours, the Nav2 map, finger grip stiffening, and the lift step before returning home. These match the raw summary, which covers the new mobile_fr3_duo URDF, SRDF, and MuJoCo model, the table macros in environment.xacro, the Nav2 map and params, and the objective trees. It also states how the changes were tested and notes a missing earlier fix. The description is related to the changeset and is not off-topic.

Waypoints re-recorded with the spine at 0.4, which Home, Place Left, Place
Right and Whole Body Home now share. Stow keeps the spine at 0.6 as the
README documents, so the stowed arms stay clear of the table tops while
navigating.
Also: drop the duplicate sensors.xml include from the MuJoCo scene, which
mobile_fr3_duo.xml already provides; lower the blocks to z 0.8; reconcile the
README's planning-scene statements with environment.xacro, which carries the
table surfaces and their legs; correct the environment.xacro header comment to
say the legs are present; and set min_y_velocity_threshold to 0.001 so small
lateral commands are not discarded.

Thanks for this. Moving dual_arm_sim onto the Mobile FR3 Duo with whole-body motion and Nav2 is a big step up, and loading the robot meshes from the vendored franka_description through package:// instead of shipping ~45 copied OBJs is exactly what MoveIt Pro 10's mujoco_package_uri is for. The NOTICE and UPSTREAM.yaml updates are thorough, and the licence files check out (the LICENSE copy is byte-identical to Menagerie franka_fr3/LICENSE, and finger_0/1.obj match Menagerie franka_emika_panda at d98292e).
A few asks, inline below. The main one is MuJoCo collision geometry. The rest are small:
Non-convex collision meshes (mobile_fr3_duo.xml). Several of the URDF collision STLs are well short of convex, and MuJoCo collides against each mesh's convex hull.
Provenance commit (NOTICE, README). Please record which moveit_pro_franka_ws commit the files came from.
market_sim references (README). market_sim isn't on main yet (#1046 is still a draft).
AGENTS.md entry. It's package-specific, and the README already covers it.
Arm visuals (mobile_fr3_duo.xml). A question, not a blocker.
Follow-ups outside this diff:
The docs no longer match this config. src/docs/docs/hardware_guides/robot_arms/franka_fr3_hardware_setup_guide.mdx (around L155, in moveit_pro) describes dual_arm_sim as the simulation counterpart of the fixed-mount franka_dual_arm_hw. The dual_arm_sim.webp thumbnail in software_installation.mdx likely shows the old robot too. A small moveit_pro docs PR alongside this one would keep them in sync.
CI on this PR ran the integration tests for hangar_sim and lab_sim only, and the description says the latest commit hasn't been run on a live stack. Could you run dual_arm_sim's objectives_integration_test once and check the start-up log for the "MuJoCo bodies do not sit where the URDF places the same-named link" warning (see AGENTS.md)?
tmrv0_2_visual.stl is ~197.5k faces, just under MuJoCo's 200k limit. That's fine, but if it's ever regenerated, decimating it would leave some headroom.
For maintainers rather than the author: dual_arm_sim and market_sim will now share one robot as two standalone, duplicated copies. That's a reasonable choice, but our conventions haven't settled how example worlds that share a robot should be structured, so it's worth agreeing on before #1046 lands. The package name also now describes the robot more than the world. A rename is out of scope here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reusing the URDF collision STLs as MuJoCo collision geometry costs simulation fidelity here: MuJoCo collides against each mesh's convex hull, and several of these meshes are well short of convex. I compiled each one in the 10.2 image's MuJoCo and compared its volume with its convex hull's volume (1.0 = convex):
mesh
volume / hull
franka_head
0.19
fr3v2/link5
0.56
fr3_duo_mount
0.69
fr3v2/link3, link4
0.74
fr3v2/link0–link2, franka_spine
0.80–0.82
link6, link7, hand, tmrv0_2
0.86–1.0
So the head collides as roughly 5x its real volume, and the elbow/wrist links as noticeably fatter than they render. That matters for contact during the block sort, and for any self-collision between the head and the arms. Separately, fr3_duo_cover.stl fails MuJoCo's exact-volume computation with "faces of mesh have inconsistent orientation".
The fix we're converging on for MJCF meshes is to add a convex decomposition of each such link to the robot's description package (here franka_description, through the vendoring flow in external_dependencies/franka_config), and reference it from the MJCF by package://, rather than keeping decomposed meshes in the _sim package. If that's too much for this PR, primitives (capsules/boxes) for the head and the worst links, plus a follow-up issue, would also work. Main's fr3.xml had the same issue with the fer meshes, so this isn't a regression, but this PR is where the head, spine and mount come in.

Fixed in f5ceef7. The model now collides already-convex parts instead of one hull per link. Measured after loading into MuJoCo, as the collided volume over the link's true mesh volume:
link
before
after
parts
franka_head
5.16x
1.106x

fr3v2/link5
1.79x

4
fr3v2/link3
1.35x
1.027x
8
fr3v2/link4
1.35x
1.024x

Your 0.19 on the head reproduced exactly, and every part re-measured after loading reads volume/own-hull 1.000, so MuJoCo's hulling is a no-op on it.
The parts come from a dedicated franka_meshes package, vendored from moveit_pro_franka_ws, rather than being written into the third-party franka_description snapshot: a vendored refresh would have discarded PickNik files that upstream never had. robots/common/utils.xacro is untouched, so the URDF and every other robot_type keep the single source mesh, and kitchen_sim's resolved description is byte-identical. fr3_duo_cover.stl is not decomposed; it is a visual-only geom here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Question, not a blocker: the visual geoms for the arms, hand and head (contype="0", group="1") now point at the same collision STLs. On main the arm visuals were the Menagerie OBJs, so the MuJoCo render probably looks coarser than before. franka_description ships visual/*.dae for these links. Converting them the way you did for tmrv0_2_visual.stl would keep the render quality, but only if it's worth the asset weight.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[written by AI]
Answering the question: yes, the render is coarser than main's, for the reason you give.
Not changed here, and the concrete reason is the asset cost rather than a deferral. MuJoCo has no COLLADA loader, so visual/*.dae cannot be referenced directly; each would need converting, as tmrv0_2_visual.stl was. That file alone is 9.9 MB, and this is about fourteen meshes.
One correction to the route, since it changes the cost: they do not have to be converted into this package. franka_meshes now carries converted visual meshes for exactly these links, so the fix is a package://franka_meshes/meshes/.../visual/... reference and no duplicated asset. I left them out of this change because wiring the visuals is a separate call from fixing the collision geometry, and this PR is already large. The collision parts in f5ceef7 do not touch the visual geoms, which still load the source mesh.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[written by AI]
Updating my earlier answer on this thread: the visuals are now wired, in a15b5ae, so this is done rather than deferred.
The 22 visual geoms for the arms, hand, head, spine and mount load franka_meshes' converted visual meshes by package://. Measured on the loaded model, 0 visual geoms still render a collision mesh, where 22 did before. The finger meshes and the converted chassis mesh were already proper visuals and are untouched.
Nothing about the physics moved, which I checked rather than assumed. Joints, actuators, sensors, bodies, cameras, sites and keyframes are unchanged at 37, 20, 3, 96, 7, 8 and 2; total mass is 230.103827 either way; the body-mass, body-inertia, joint-range and actuator-gain arrays are bit-identical; and geom count stays 144, of which 104 collide and 40 are visual. Only the mesh-asset count moves, 46 to 59, which is the 13 visual meshes. All 30 objective XML files still parse.
Verified live against MoveIt Pro 10.2.0 with MuJoCo 3.6.0, not only offline: the package://franka_meshes/... paths resolve through mujoco_package_uri and the model loads and runs 1000 steps stable with the same counts.

Could you record the moveit_pro_franka_ws commit these were copied from, for example (packages mobile_fr3_duo_mock and mobile_fr3_duo_sim at <sha>)? The same goes for the README sentence and the header comment in mobile_fr3_duo.xml. Without a commit, there's no way to diff against the source later, or to port a fix in either direction. The franka_ws repo is BSD-3-Clause like this one, so no licence change is needed. It's just provenance.

NOTICE line 10: the copied PickNik files now cite moveit_pro_franka_ws at b510ad58bde5740d748a0b5e79e0c151a0309e98.
README.md line 13: the same commit on that sentence.
description/mujoco/mobile_fr3_duo.xml header: the same commit beside the source path.
While there, the vendored description got the provenance it was also missing: under Third-party files: it now cites franka_description at 7aeeddc449edf8d62b594f9e36a81da53e7796f9, the commit src/external_dependencies/franka_config/UPSTREAM.yaml pins. The two citations sit in separate blocks, so the PickNik work is not attributed to the upstream commit.
Agreed it is provenance rather than licensing; both repositories are BSD-3-Clause and nothing about the licence changed.
These files, and the whole-body and navigation Objectives, are copied from the Mobile FR3 Duo configuration in PickNik's [moveit_pro_franka_ws](https://github.com/PickNikRobotics/moveit_pro_franka_ws) (`mobile_fr3_duo_mock` and `mobile_fr3_duo_sim`) and adapted.

market_sim isn't on main. It only exists in draft #1046, so this table describes differences from a package a reader of this branch can't find. Either sequence this PR after #1046, or reword the section (here and in L11) as "the same files are planned for market_sim (#1046)" and add the comparison table when that lands.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[written by AI]
You were right, and taken the second way in 5ab3064: reworded rather than resequenced.
The comparison table is removed, not shortened, and the "Difference from market_sim's copy" heading is gone with it. The sentence above it no longer asserts the package exists: it now says the same Mobile FR3 Duo files are planned for a second supermarket sim in #1046, deliberately as a second standalone copy, so a fix to one will have to be made in the other by hand. One line notes that the file-by-file comparison belongs there once that package lands.
I also found a second reference with the same defect and fixed it in the same commit: src/external_dependencies/franka_config/UPSTREAM.yaml's notes said "dual_arm_sim and market_sim use the Mobile FR3 Duo", which named the same absent package.

This is a good write-up, but it's specific to one package. The bar at the bottom of AGENTS.md is knowledge "useful to almost every future agent session in this project", and the package README's Scene section already covers it (L39). I'd move the detail into src/dual_arm_sim/README.md, next to test/test_scene.py, and drop this section, or leave a one-line pointer at most. The mujoco_package_uri entry above it is general and fits AGENTS.md well.

Moved in 5ab3064, and your reading of the bar was right.
The section is out of AGENTS.md, which now carries one line under that heading pointing at the package README's Scene section. The write-up itself is in src/dual_arm_sim/README.md as a ### The spawn window subsection, placed immediately after the Scene bullets so it sits beside the test/test_scene.py references that guard both edges, which is where a reader meets the test.
One thing the move exposed: three references named AGENTS.md, not one. The README bullet you were reading pointed at the section, and test/test_scene.py named it twice more, in the docstrings of the two tests that guard the window. All three now point at the README section, so nothing dangles.
Agreed on the mujoco_package_uri entry above it; that one is general and stays.
The bridge's module docstring said drift is added and that AMCL has a real
correction to make. Neither is true here: launch/navigation.launch.py starts the
node with noise_enabled false, and this package has no AMCL at all, because
map -> odom is a fixed identity. The launch file, config.yaml and the README all
said so already, so the docstring was the one place that disagreed.
The drift model is still described, as the optional behaviour it is, with the
note that this package turns it off. Two further mentions that assumed drift was
on, in base_twist_to_planar.py's docstring and the joint_state_broadcaster
comment, now say the same thing.

Verify restored controllers before reporting success.
The final SwitchController checks only that the controller-manager request was accepted. It does not check that joint_trajectory_admittance_controller and base_jgvc reached active. If activation fails after acceptance, this Sequence can return success while Nav2 or later arm actions have no restored controller. Add the same post-switch active-state verification used by src/lab_sim/test/objectives_integration_test.py to both restore paths, and return failure when either controller is not active.

description/mujoco held two byte-identical Apache 2.0 copies, LICENSE and
LICENSE-franka_description. One copy passes the licence on to a recipient, so
the plain LICENSE goes and LICENSE-franka_description stays, untouched. The
three places that named the removed file now name the surviving one: both
Menagerie blocks in the NOTICE and the model's header comment.
The package also had no LICENSE of its own, unlike thirteen of its neighbours.
It now carries the same BSD 3-Clause text they do, copied byte for byte from an
existing one, which is what the package NOTICE has always said applies.
…m franka_meshes
MuJoCo collides a mesh as its convex hull, so a link whose collision mesh is far
from convex collides as the filled-in shape. The head was the worst: its own
volume is 0.19 of its hull's, so it collided as 5.16 times its true size, which
matters for contact during the block sort and for head-to-arm self-collision.
The model now collides already-convex parts, loaded by package:// from the newly
vendored franka_meshes. Effective collision volume, as a multiple of each link's
true mesh volume:
franka_head 5.16x -> 1.106x (3 parts)
fr3v2/link5 1.79x -> 1.015x (6 parts)
fr3_duo_mount 1.45x -> 0.998x (4 parts)
fr3v2/link3 1.35x -> 1.027x (8 parts)
fr3v2/link4 1.35x -> 1.024x (8 parts)
Every part loads already convex, so MuJoCo's own hulling is a no-op on it and
the union tracks the real shape. The parts never go near a URDF, because MoveIt
collides the mesh itself: franka_description's shared collision template in
robots/common/utils.xacro is untouched, the kitchen example's resolved
description is byte-identical, and the visual geoms keep the source mesh.
The parts live in a PickNik package rather than inside the third-party
franka_description snapshot, so a vendored refresh resyncs them from their real
source instead of discarding files upstream never had.
franka_meshes is pinned to the merge commit that landed it on its upstream main,
so a refresh resolves a real branch tip.
Thanks for the review, and for measuring the hull ratios rather than describing them. Answering your four follow-ups, which are the part that never became threads.
The docs. Both of your claims check out. In the product docs, hardware_guides/robot_arms/franka_fr3_hardware_setup_guide.mdx:155 still calls dual_arm_sim the simulation counterpart of the fixed-mount franka_dual_arm_hw, and the thumbnail is software_installation/_static/images/dual_arm_sim.webp, referenced once from software_installation.mdx:316. There is a second mention at line 109 of the same file that you did not name; that one stays true, since the robot is still dual-arm. A separate docs change, not this PR, since it is a different repository.
The integration test. Your observation was right and the cause is designed rather than an oversight: ci.yaml puts dual_arm_sim in the integration-test-weekly job, which fires only on workflow_dispatch or the Sunday 06:00 cron and is deliberately kept out of build-status's needs list so it can never gate a PR. integration-test (lab_sim, hangar_sim) is the per-PR gate, which is why those two are the only reports here, and the check list shows integration-test-weekly as skipped. A manual dispatch produces the run and the body-offset check you asked for.
tmrv0_2_visual.stl. Confirmed, and closer to the limit than "about 197.5k" suggests: the LFS pointer records 9,875,834 bytes, and a binary STL is 84 + 50N bytes, so N = 197,515 triangles against MuJoCo's 200,000. That is 1.3 % headroom. Agreed on the conditional: no change now, decimate whenever it is regenerated.
The shared robot. Agreed it is worth settling before #1046 lands, and the cost showed up in this review already: your collision and arm-visual comments are both fixes that would have to be applied by hand to a second standalone copy. That is an argument for agreeing the structure first. The rename stays out of scope here.
Your main ask is fixed in f5ceef7, with the numbers on that thread.

Records which upstream commit each copied set came from, so a fix can be ported
in either direction and the copies can be diffed against their source later: the
PickNik configuration files against moveit_pro_franka_ws, and the vendored
description against franka_description's own release commit.
Stops the README comparing this package against one that is not on main yet. The
comparison belongs here once that package exists, so the table goes for now
rather than describing files a reader of this branch cannot open.
Moves the spawn-window write-up out of AGENTS.md and into this package's README,
beside the test that guards it, because it is specific to one package while that
file is for knowledge every session needs. AGENTS.md keeps a one-line pointer so
the guardrail is still visible there, and the three references that named
AGENTS.md now name the README.

The arms, hand, head, spine and mount rendered their COLLISION meshes, so the
simulator looked coarser than the real robot. Those 22 visual geoms now load
franka_meshes' converted visual meshes by package://, and none of them renders a
collision mesh any more.
Nothing about the physics moves. Joints, actuators, sensors, bodies, cameras,
sites and keyframes are unchanged at 37, 20, 3, 96, 7, 8 and 2; total mass is
230.103827000 either way; and the body-mass, body-inertia, joint-range and
actuator-gain arrays are bit-identical. Geom count stays 144, of which 104
collide and 40 are visual, exactly as before. Only the mesh-asset count moves,
46 to 59, which is the 13 visual meshes.
The generator's source-mesh lookup now tries its own workspace first and a
vendoring layout second: in the vendored copy the old single path did not exist,
so its --paths and --check exited non-zero. The package test follows the same
lookup rather than hardcoding one. Both are declared in UPSTREAM.yaml's
modified_paths, and the vendored suite passes 64 tests with the generator check
exiting 0.
@sanchit-badamikar The blocks were slipping out of the grasp in dual_arm_sim. #1144 adjusts finger friction, contact stiffness and loaded motion to retain them, and fits the segmented surface before estimating the grasp pose. It targets your fm/dual-arm-mobile-duo branch. Repeated runs placed all six blocks correctly.
