Follow-up to #3048, which switched dictionary v1 queries from Apollo Client to plain fetch. Reviewing it found two problems, fixed here.
1. Non-standard responses
A null body threw a TypeError. {data: null} was returned as null, and callers crashed destructuring it.
errors that isn't an array made body.errors.map throw a TypeError, so the distinct fallback never ran.
Non-JSON and non-standard error responses lost their body. Apollo's error kept it (networkError.result / bodyText). The distinct / startHeight fallbacks find the server's message with JSON.stringify(err), so these responses no longer triggered the fallback.
Fix:query() reads the body as text, then parses it.
Only a non-empty errors array counts as GraphQL errors.
data must be a non-null object.
Any other response throws DictionaryQueryError with:
a new enumerable body field (the parsed JSON, or the raw text), so the existing fallback detection sees the dictionary's message again;
the first 500 characters of the body in its message, because the logger prints only the message.
DictionaryQueryError was added in #3048 and hasn't been released, so changing its constructor is safe.
2. Timed-out queries kept running
timeout() only races the promise. A timed-out request kept its connection and went on downloading and parsing the body. Apollo behaved the same way before #3048.
Fix:fetch now gets signal: AbortSignal.timeout((dictionaryTimeout + 1) * 1000). The timeout() wrappers stay as they are. The extra second makes them fire first, so callers see the same errors and behavior; the abort only frees the request they have given up on.
Unchanged: fallback detection (JSON.stringify(err).includes(...)), init(), getData(), and every timeout() call.

Testing
New mocked-fetch tests in dictionaryV1.spec.ts:
null and {data: null} bodies throw DictionaryQueryError.
The distinct retry works when the dictionary reports it in GraphQL errors, in non-array errors, and in a plain-text body.
A non-JSON body appears in the error message.
Abort, with a 0.1 s timeout: init() rejects with its own "Dictionary metadata query timeout" message before the request is aborted, and the request is aborted with a TimeoutError about a second later.
Against main's dictionaryV1.ts, the 6 new or changed cases fail; with this change all 9 mocked tests pass.
Other checks:
tsc and Prettier pass. ESLint reports no errors on the changed files.
The 15 network-backed dictionary v1 tests fail on this branch and on main alike, because the test dictionary on gateway.subquery.network currently answers HTTP 503.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Dictionary query errors now retain the response body and include response details in the error message when a response contains invalid JSON, an HTTP error, or missing or unusable data.
Timed-out dictionary requests are now aborted one second after the configured timeout, helping prevent requests from continuing after they have timed out.
…eries
Follow-up to #3048.
- `query()` reads the body as text before parsing it, so a `null` body,
`{data: null}` or `errors` that isn't an array throws a
`DictionaryQueryError` instead of a `TypeError`.
- `DictionaryQueryError` keeps a non-standard response body in an
enumerable `body` field, so the existing `distinct` fallback detection
matches it again as it did with Apollo's error. The message also
includes the first 500 characters of the body for the logs.
- `fetch` is aborted a second after `dictionaryTimeout`. Callers still
time out first through `timeout()` with the same error; the abort only
frees the request they abandoned.

Walkthrough
Dictionary v1 queries now parse response text directly, retain response bodies in query errors, validate response data, and abort requests one second after the configured timeout.

Response errors and delayed abort packages/node-core/src/indexer/dictionary/v1/dictionaryV1.ts, packages/node-core/src/indexer/dictionary/v1/dictionaryV1.spec.ts, packages/node-core/CHANGELOG.md
DictionaryQueryError can store a response body. Queries parse response text, include response details in errors, and reject missing or invalid data. Requests are aborted one second after the configured timeout. Tests cover error responses, unsupported distinct responses, and delayed abortion. The changelog records these changes.
subquery/subql#3048: Introduced DictionaryV1.query() and DictionaryQueryError, which this change extends.

- Line 95: Update the response validation check in DictionaryV1 to reject
array-valued data as well as null and non-object values, so invalid GraphQL data
is handled through the existing DictionaryQueryError path with the response
body.

Description
Follow-up to #3048, which switched dictionary v1 queries from Apollo Client to plain
fetch. Reviewing it found two problems, fixed here.1. Non-standard responses
nullbody threw aTypeError.{data: null}was returned asnull, and callers crashed destructuring it.errorsthat isn't an array madebody.errors.mapthrow aTypeError, so thedistinctfallback never ran.networkError.result/bodyText). Thedistinct/startHeightfallbacks find the server's message withJSON.stringify(err), so these responses no longer triggered the fallback.Fix:
query()reads the body as text, then parses it.errorsarray counts as GraphQL errors.datamust be a non-null object.DictionaryQueryErrorwith:bodyfield (the parsed JSON, or the raw text), so the existing fallback detection sees the dictionary's message again;DictionaryQueryErrorwas added in #3048 and hasn't been released, so changing its constructor is safe.2. Timed-out queries kept running
timeout()only races the promise. A timed-out request kept its connection and went on downloading and parsing the body. Apollo behaved the same way before #3048.Fix:
fetchnow getssignal: AbortSignal.timeout((dictionaryTimeout + 1) * 1000). Thetimeout()wrappers stay as they are. The extra second makes them fire first, so callers see the same errors and behavior; the abort only frees the request they have given up on.Unchanged: fallback detection (
JSON.stringify(err).includes(...)),init(),getData(), and everytimeout()call.Fixes # (no issue opened)
